Hey Indie Hackers 👋
Just wanted to reach out to the community and see who’s based in SF.
I’m a digital marketing specialist based in Brisbane, Australia. I’ve rarely traveled in the past and this year I’m eager to start experiencing life outside my comfort zone.
With a background working in startups while on my own indie hacker journey, I’d naturally love to spend a few weeks in SF.
As I’m currently a freelancer, I was planning on spending some time there in May. I was hoping to get a feel for what it’d be like working in another country.
I know there’s a bit of a trend to start moving away from SF, but I’d be disappointed if I never made the journey.
I’d be eager to know if anyone would have any suggestions on things to do while I’m in SF - whether it be places to visit, meetups to attend, or even if you’d like to catch up.
I’d also appreciate any suggestions on accommodation, as well as potential offices/co-working spaces I could work out of throughout the trip.
In a dream world, I’d love to organise a tour of Google, Facebook, or LinkedIn - but I understand these are pretty exclusive experiences.
I’d appreciate any recommendations you might have, or even introductions that could help 🙏
What's up Lachlan! Been in SF a little over 3 years now and it's definitely still an awesome place. Theres tons of different neighborhoods in SF, each with a different cool vibe. Ya gotta check out the Mission, hit Dolores park on a Saturday, go to North Beach and China Town. Depending on how long you're here theres plenty of outdoor activities to do and national parks you can check out.
Skip the hotels for an Airbnb or if you're trying to go the hostel route I've heard the Green Tortoise is pretty cool (the other hostels aren't in that great an area, I'd stay away). There's plenty of coworking options ya can find online or ask if want to go the free route they usually let you work a couple days there for free to test it out - just don't tell them you're visiting.
Thanks Joe, appreciate it! Will be sure to check those out.
Very neat! I think you'll have a great time here! There's always something going on and I've always told my wife that if I was younger and single... I'd never have to eat alone (or pay for it!) if I wanted because of all the meetups, corporate / startup events... food for days.
I'm not really a planner when it comes to vacations, so, I kind of figure it out as I go!
But, if you want to meet for coffee, I'd be down! I work in the Mission @ 22nd and Folsom... a new-ish coffee shop (4 weeks old!) — you can see some footage here: https://youtu.be/wQhMxPvu8ME?t=202
I'd buy you a ☕!
Hey Lachlan, Arrived in UC Berkeley 2 weeks ago! Let's talk!
Sure, I'll shoot you a message!
