Anyone care to share tips and stories for booking interviewees?

I'm struggling to actually find and book the best possible interviewees for a new narrative podcast I'm producing.

  • I'd like to hear stories about booking high profile guests.
  • Does LinkedIn work for anyone?
  • What should an initial cold email/message say that will increase the chances of a booking?
  • do you send them any additional info or just link to a web page?
  • any other tips or stories about booking interviewees?

Follow them and comment on posts long before you ask them to be a guest. I recently called out a fitness Instagrammer on my story. They do a lot of storytelling of other people and I wanted to let this person have a chance to tell their story. 2 minutes later we were working out details.

Hey @patcheung. The journey has been great actually, I've booked several guests since posting this. During this difficult learning process I guess I developed a better system as the vast majority of people are saying yes to interviews now!

A few insights off the top of my head:

    • LinkedIn messages take time, less is more when it comes to requests. Provide a website link for them to see.

    • I developed a set of modular email paragraphs in a Notion document that I reuse and update after each email.

    • The emails I send to people are actually quite long, and longer seems to work better. But! only if you structure the content just right it seems.

    • People who put themselves out there on podcasts, or who write books/newsletters are far more likely to be a podcast guest than someone who never thought about it

    • I have developed three "prep documents" that I send to people covering (1) talking points but not questions, (2) brief context on the show series and (3) a guide on the basics of good audio, mic technique and choosing the best room for audio.

    • have a decent podcast landing page and keep updating it

I'm curious. Did you ever find good info on this? How has your journey been recently?
