Anyone quitting a promising idea because the early hosting costs are beyond your budget?
We have run many early stage projects where the hosting costs are negligible these days, with efficient hosting now so affordable.
But the odd project we look to launch have heavy resource requirements that will require hundreds if not thousands of dollars per month from the start, a budget not all bootstrappers or indie hackers can afford.
Interested in talking with anyone currently in a situation like this to bounce some ideas around. Have some options that could potentially eliminate or reduce some of these costs.
Is there a way you can charge for the resources?
Like is someone uses 100 dollars of server costs, charge them 120.
Have you looked into bare metal hosting? Depends on what you need but in the early stage of your project you can trade reliability for resources and just go with a simple bare metal server from Hetzner, OVH and others. You'll get a lot more for your money than on any cloud hoster. At the beginning you probably don't need multi datacenter fail overs or instant scalability.
You'll maybe have to do a little bit more of administrating but you get a lot for that.

This intrigued me too.
I’m not the poster but I can think of examples. Anything requiring processing of large data sets such as machine learning or 3D scene generation springs to mind.
Data and processing resources are a key factor here, but other situations too.
Main one for me was one with lots of scraping, crawling and processing that built up huge datasets very quickly.
Those datasets grew even without any users and needed to hit a large critical mass before it provided value to paying users.
Went the credit route before which helps, but was then a race to get users onboard before the credits expired. That project crashed and burned even after a switch to OVH bare metal.
But looking to restart something similar and could even have an option cheaper than PH Ship for others in a similar situation.
