Anyone thought about doing game development?
by
Coderforlife22
Just curious if anyone else has went into this space.
Thoughts?
These are my thoughts:
I took a game development certificate alongside my degree, I ultimately ended up choosing not to follow it as a career, but I still practice game development as a hobby.
I decided against it as a career because the more I attended industry events and got to hear from others in the industry, the more I heard about lower pay, higher stress, and other problems at big studios. I also struggled with not having creative control in situations where I was just the 'programmer'.
I would also say game development is extremely different from general web dev/software and isn't always what people imagine when they fantasize about a career making games, but it is extremely rewarding in its own way, and if it suits you there is no reason you shouldn't at least try.
If you're truly interested, there are tons and tons of free tutorials and tools available, so dive in and try to create a simple game just as you would any project. If you are looking at it strictly from a business angle and trying to make money, it's an extremely competitive space and I think you'd be better off doing almost anything else.
With that being said, gaming is a massive growing market and I think there's a ton of room for websites/apps that are peripheral to gaming, which is what I do (I don't want to promote here but you can look in my bio if curious).
Great reply! Much appreciated man. I agree with all of your points. These days the landscape is basically way to competitive for indie devs.
Thought about it: yes. But I feel it's to hard to get successful at it. I admire the people who can do it as an indiedeveloper.
My dream is to get rich doing other types of software and build a small game studio with the profits. It might never happen but you never know huh?
Yup! Exactly. I have similar aspirations. I was a indie dev for a few years back in 2006-2011. Things were much easier back then and I had some success at it right after finishing high school. I made a few games and was able to travel for a few years off the money I was earning. Good times. And then it all came crashing down with google changing up the play store algorithm, and things like game builders etc made things more crowded.
These days I still think about doing it but the space is just a mess now. Unless you're a publisher or have thousands to spend on ads similar to what they do, it's a slim shot.
