App to help with nutrition/meal tracking -- Would you use this?

Hi All,

I have gone through cycles of dieting and tracking food with apps like myfitnesspal and I always had an issue with never really knowing how to estimate the weight of the meat I was about to eat so I could count the calories and track it in the app.

There is always the option to use a food scale but I often didn't have access to one (eating out, eating at college cafeteria, etc.).

Would you use an app that can estimate the weight of the meat you are eating? The app would be simple, take a picture of the food(chicken for example) and the app would then estimate the weight of the chicken, say 5oz for example. Then, you would be able to put the 5oz of chicken in your meal tracking app for a more accurate tracking option than just guessing.

Is this something that you would use?

PS: I've already made this app once but I wasn't confident in the execution of how it worked/looked so I never really showed anyone. I have thought of ways to make it a whole lot better but wanted to get some validation before going and potentially wasting time.

I'm a nutritionist and this is a big pain for my clients. They go messy when eating out because they don't really know the size of the portions they must eat. So, I thing its a good idea.

I am a physiologist and work, consult and developed a related web app in this space as it relates to health and fitness programing and creating nutritional profiles. I believe this technology would be useful within a more featured app that then could also pull all the macronutrient data about the food source once it identifies it. Even more valuable would be the ability to identify the food on a plate along side with other food products, so like steak, broccoli and potato... and the related calories and macros corresponding to the size of the portions on the dish. Your main competition is weighing every food portion which is a pain to do and your secondary competition is a popular method that used hand portions. Essentially you are solving friction in the process of portion control and that is one major step in a larger flow to success for weight loss.
