April Retro: crossing $100k all time from side projects ($4.2k last month)

awesome amount of transparency and very inspirational. is your "profit" including any expenses to run your projects? i very much like how the value of the work you've done in the past is continuing to increase over time, especially for Place Card Me
Yep! The overwhelming expense is Stripe fees, since my hosting costs are tiny and I don't really have any other business expenses. Also, I don't count my own time invested as an expense, but instead translate it to a "salary" of sorts as you can see in the dashboard. If I had to pay myself my real rates, it'd be a lot uglier!
Yep, that's my favorite visual from the dashboard as well. I want to encourage people who have slow starts that there can be a worthwhile outcome at the end - it just takes a big up front investment to get there.
Congrats! I think that's a super important milestone!
I'm also considering not setting goals this month. Similarly, I feel like I'll be way more productive if I work on things that feel interesting to me in the moment.
Thanks Allison! Yeah I feel like especially given your recent bouts with burnout it's super important to make sure you're working on things you enjoy. Long term over short term. Who needs goals? :)
Congrats! Nice Open Side Project Dashboard. How do you track your hours for each project?
I use toggl to log what I'm doing in real time. Got in the habit back when I had to report billable hours and liked the accountability and transparency of it!
Congrats!
Thanks David!
Congrats on the milestone! And great writeup. I like the saying you used "Journey over Destination" — if you're able to, why not focus on the interesting and fun problems? At least that's what's working for me too. Thanks for sharing!
"Interesting and fun" is definitely a great North Star!
