I started a newsletter - https://indie.watch/ - a few weeks ago and I just released my 3rd issue this morning.
So far, I have ~125 people signed up.
Here's a quick timeline:
Week 1: 55 people, 73% open rate
Week 2: 102 people, 69%
Week 3 [today]: 124 people, 59% (typically climbs as the day goes on)
I don't really have any context here, so are these numbers good, bad, or somewhere in between?
I feel like these numbers are respectable, but I'm really motivated to make this newsletter the best it can be. My stretch goal is 4000 readers.
So, if there is any constructive criticism or growth tips y'all have - I'm all ears!
Is your goal just for "readers" themselves? or is this a leading indicator to something else you wish to do. Monetizing by ads, by selling digital products, creating your own product, monetizing a community?
And what avenues are you going through right now? If you said you emailed your past contacts, about 10,000 people and 100 signed up. I'd say that was pretty bad and you could do better, or even hit them up again with some proof of past issues.
If you posted once on twitter, and you got that. with 100 followers, then you're doing spectacularly.
For comparison I started a newsletter years ago, I had 50 signed up within the first 6 days and then over 2.5 years average 50 new signups a week. To some that may be bad (low) but I had a small niche that around 300,000 in the world work in. so I was doing pretty good even to get to 3,000 within year 2. 1% of the total market.
and I monetized from around 200 subscribers with ads from readers. But I could only do that because I targeted working professionals via LinkedIn. And could convey that they were CEO's/VPs, etc. A hard to reach audience.
If you cobbled together 200 people from every single network you know of, then not so good. If you tweeted it, reddit post, indiehacker post, and emailed a few personal contacts. then you're doing great so far. keep going.
