I'm increasingly seeing people posting "tutorial-like" content. Definitive guides to do something. "How to X" and "Do this to get Z" (not always in the title, but that's the gist of the post content).
I also have the impression, this is happening cause people think, that's how they will build a following or audience or get customers. And I think it's wrong.
What's wrong with that is, that IMHO Indie Hackers is the wrong place to do that.
Talking to the folks that may feel addressed in the following:
Those "tutorial-like" posts (from what I can tell) rarely seem to get any upvotes or comments. And you're putting so much effort into them!
It reminds me of the guidelines on Hacker News, which essentially say they don't like tutorial articles posted and down weight them. The reason for that is this:
HN is for articles that gratify intellectual curiosity. Most tutorials don't do that; it doesn't fit with being a recipe for a task. If a recipe were to dive deeply into how and why its steps work, how they got that way, and compared other recipes that have (or don't have) similar steps, it would gratify intellectual curiosity much better.
Tutorials, how great they may be, also don't give much room for interaction. No reason to discuss an article, it's complete as is. Additionally, there's not much room for (dis)agreement with a tutorial, and upvotes tend to happen when there is something to (dis)agree. Or when people want to see a discussion.
What I think you should do instead:
You've put so much effort into that (presumably great) content! Post that it on more fitting platforms, where it will thrive. Twitter threads seem to thrive consistently on that shit. Post it on your own platform and link it from IH, if you're proud of it. Indie Hackers is a community, not an article platform like Medium.
However, this is just a gut feeling. Maybe I'm wrong. Do you think I'm wrong?
Disclaimer: I don't think this kind of content is wrong because I don't want to see it. I think it's wrong because it's the wrong approach you're taking to build your following.
