Absolutely. Otherwise you’re giving someone an unfair advantage just because of their previous actions.
There are very few "original" ideas out there... unless you plan to create something revolutionary like the iPhone. Just find something that's of good utility and add your own spin to it.
And even the iPhone wasn't really that revolutionary. Smartphones existed long before (blackberry for example). Imagine if Apple had said "no we can't make the iphone cos that would be copying blackberry"
I think this is the best path. To play the devil’s advocate further, I would argue you don’t even need a spin. If you execute better and make the customer slightly more satisfied, that might be your spin!

On the VC topic, it comes with the territory. But one should be conscious that there are some fields and opportunities which are not accessible in a bootstrapped approach because they require upfront investment. This concerns a lot of software actually!
My post only attempts to say we should not choose one path and restrict possibilities because it is cool or because we erroneously think we can follow the same path as some masters of the art.
