Are you delivering enough stories...?
On some of my most productive days, I didn't complete a single ticket or story and I looked back and thought what did I even do today...?
My next thought would be... what am I going to say at tomorrow's stand-up? 🤷♂️
Some stand-ups can be so ticket-focused that even on my most productive days, I've felt uncomfortable giving an update if I hadn't progressed a ticket...
👉 Work needs to be done and tickets need to be progressed, but for me, software development is about teams.
If you're so ticket-focused with your developers, you risk taking your high performers for granted.
Those high performers:
👉 Coach and mentor teammates. (you don't have to be a tech lead to do this)
👉 Put the team ahead of their individual "success".
👉 They contribute to unblocking other devs and support wider teammates too. (in some cases, wider teams).
If you're judging them on
👉 Lines of code committed.
👉 Number of commits per day.
👉 Story points delivered per sprint.
...Then you're missing the bigger picture - Software development is ultimately about people, relationships and teams.
