Are You Really Qualified to be an Entrepreneur?

As Square co-founder Jim McKelvey reminds us, "There are times when we don't get to be an expert, because there can be no experts in the new."

Once you step outside of existing markets and break a new path - you're operating outside of the zone of expertise. You're an explorer. You have to learn quickly by experimenting, because the answers can't be found in a book.

For example, my current project is ContactLink. Imagine customers video calling from your website or business card, to the App in your pocket. Or scheduling an appointment, sending you a text message or a secure email, or leaving a video message.

It doesn't fit into any existing market. It's not phone, it's not email, it's not a chatbot. Nobody is an expert in this market. But that won't stop my team from building one.

So are your qualified to be an entrepreneur? Yes, you're qualified. But no, that doesn't guarantee you'll succeed. Most startups don't. If you're passionate about solving a problem, it's worth it either way.

You can print out the little certificate above if that helps :-)

Leave a comment and tell me when & how you finally knew you were qualified to become an IndieHacker and start your own experiment!
