Are you willing to give any commission to a marketplace for selling your saas?

A few months ago I launched a listing site called https://indiehacks.link, where you can promote your saas for free. So far it's been doing good for a side project.
For this step, I also want to let people list their saas for sell. kind of like acquire.com.
but I'm having a hard time coming up with a revenue model for that.

Based on what I have seen, most alternatives charge their buyers for giving access to their listing data. but I'm not sure this model will work on IndieHacks.

So I would love to get some feedback from you, does taking a commission from sellers sounds good? any other pricing?

Most definitely. The hardest part of selling a company is getting a buyer and, if you can help with that, then I would definitely pay for it.

I've sold on TinyAcquisitions before and I happily paid their commission for selling my SaaS. If you do want to go this route, please be open about your fee - I never managed to find TinyAcquisitions' fee

interesting.. can you share what percentage of commission they charged?

      1. 3

I don't remember the exact number but it was around 5-10%, pretty hefty fee but would gladly pay it again :)

I would happily pay a commission to sellers if they could increase my MRR. The % I would be willing to part with for me would be high since it's a one man show (https://www.zigpoll.com) but I think 20%-30% should be reasonable for most SaaS companies out there assuming they don't have to do too much heavy lifting.

not unless they provide a serious value add. i sold an ecomm business in 2021. didn't feel the site i listed on provided nearly enough value. my sale that takes me effort should not be your passive income.

umm don't you think when you are listening your projects one someone else's site, it takes effort from their end to maintain their as well?

      1. 2

this is a loaded question. it takes effort to maintain a website but I don't believe that effort is commensurate with the amount that is being charged on platforms like flippa etc.

        1. 1

I get your point, especially if the marketplace is not transparent enough about their charges.

But if the platform is transparent & knowing all the charges, someone still lists their products, then I don't see much scope to complain.

and it's not just website maintenance, doing the marketing & support stuffs to connect the buyers & sellers doesn't sound very easy to me.

you asked our thoughts i gave you mine. I get it you have bias for your project to work but when you solicit feedback just listen and move on. do what you want with it.

            1. 1

think there's a difference between feedback vs criticising without proper reasons.

anyways, thanks for sharing. let's move on.

Usually when startups are looking for being acquired they look out for companies who help them get a buyer. If you're connected to a lot of SaaS startups via your platform and you build relation with potential buyers (eg. https://saas.group) you might offer it to them as a premium service and work out a custom deal in each case. I'm sure they're willing to pay a couple of % and you may monetise additional services like legal council, mediation, etc.

yeah makes sense. thanks for sharing Adam

    Seems like a good deal

would you like share a commission percentage that sounds reasonable?

      1. 1

Yes, once my product is done!!

Sounds reasonable and legit. If you help people sell their stuff it is ok to ask for commission. Many businesses operate that way. Plus, they risk nothing - they pay once they receive benefit. The question is how you are going to track if the deal was sealed - this can be tricky if both parties can get in touch.

There's only one way to find out.

    It's called an affiliate program.

Only list sites if they have an up-and-running affiliate program.

Every link is an affiliate link.

I think everyone will pay commission if you can drive sales for them...

    1. 1

sorry, think I make a typo.
I meant more like selling your saas/entire business.

  9. 1

Yes, I'd pay a commission to anyone who helps me generate sales.

Oh, yeah I think it's fair enough. I believe some SaaS buying/selling platforms already do this.

        1. 1

would you like share what commission percentage(like 3/5/..) that sounds reasonable to you?

You might be surprised especially if you have a unique set of indie SaaS companies.

Also would love to see https://versoly.com/ listed as an indie alternative to Webflow

are you asking this coz it's not live on the site yet?

          1. 1

Was cleaning out my notifications and saw this, so just checked the site and couldn't see it.

            1. 1

Oh, it must be in the queue. It should be live within a couple of weeks.

But if you have the option to skip the queue by paying a one-time fee.
