As a dev, how did you grow your social media follower base?

Although I have a bunch of SEO related ideas for additional pages, tools, and blog posts, I'm really stuck with social media. My Twitter follower count is 0 (obviously as I haven't done much there).

How do you spend your time marketing on social channels when you have so much product development and other things related that you need to focus on? Do you use some tools that help you be active on certain topics? And how did you start growing from 0 followers?
