As a developer, what do you regret the most?
There was a recent quora question, where a newbie developer asked:
"as a developer, what do you regret the most?"
A seasoned developer replied: "What I regret the most is that I spent too much time on the technical side. Learning the latest frameworks. And learning all new languages. But not finishing any side project. Always starting but not completing. A jack of all trades and master of none."
Do you also have something to share?
What I regret the most is having spent too many years to working for other companies instead of starting my own projects. The biggest opportunity cost is not financial, but creative. Being an employee is the #1 factor for creative stagnation IMO.
Spot on, it's emotionally draining working for non devs. I'm a puzzle solver. Give me a puzzle and I'll work it out for you.
You wanting me to attend stand ups to validate my existence is soul crushing.
But what will the delivery manager and product managers do without your crucial contribution to the daily standup??? They'll go crazy without the daily fix of "I'm still working on it"
As a new developer I already regret that I haven't started developing earlier in life. I've been in the army for 13+ years and at age 31 I finally made the switch to become full time developer.
I'm starting my first job at July 1st as a Junior :)
Congratulations and well played. Just turned 32 here and wished Id started sooner, too. It scratches an itch that nothing else can.
True, but it does show people ur never too old to learn. That somewhat motivational for some.

My biggest regret is probably not taking software development as seriously as I could have while still in school. I did enough to get by with grades but there is no doubt that I missed out on some great connections with people in the industry and I set myself back when it came to landing my first job out of school.
All in all, I'm still happy with how things have worked out

You need to finish what you start, at least for the sake of learning and completion.
For every entrepreneur with a dozen of half-finished projects there is one with a few, and somehow end up with something.
I regret not focusing more on lean startup, marketing, growth hacking and validating ideas.
I spent too much time developing projects with crazy scope or because I was excited to learn the technology rather than focusing on the value of the project.
What I regret is that I didn't learn from non-technical colleagues like in Marketing so I could use that knowledge for my startup instead of learning it the hard way
I would say that, as a developer, I have spent more time on frontend rather than backend and because of that I don't like the backend stuff like databases, servers etc.
I like to keep my projects simpler and most of the time client-sided. I think I should've known more into backend to create more better products.
