As a programmer without a great app idea, where should you start?

Building a Saas application attracts me a lot but I don’t want to waste my time on an idea that is not well-thought through. I know that it will require time and effort, is there some intermediate step that I could take already? In terms of the effort and time, what goes before building a full-on application with subscription model, features, and so on?
