For the unaware, here in the UK there is a large market for Software developers, project managers, designers to name a few, in the contracting work space, the current workflow normally is as follows:
Write CV
Upload to Job sites (CWJobs) etc.
Wait for recruiter to call you to discuss a role.
Get Interview.
Get contract for 3-6 months.
Charge a day rate for example £450.00 Per day.
Recruitment Agencies charge employer £550 per day.
Both parties profit.
After being in this loop it really grinds my gears these recruitment agencies eat out my pocket so here is an idea I have started and wanted some feedback.
In short without giving out to many details...
Developer A registers on the platform, and sets their current status to seeking work, for free, no cost to the contractor.
Employers can login to the platform to seek out potential talent, and filter by specific skills they are looking for, contacts the contractor to setup initial interview / contract opportunity.
so in short skipping out the middle men who just rob contractors blind daily
' literally '
Cheers
Hey, love the idea of simplifying the software contracting workflow. I'm not based in the UK, nor do I work as a software contractor in the capacity you described, but I did have a couple things standout to me from your post that I figured you might find interesting to consider.
What value does a recruiter bring to the table currently? I think it's really important to understand the "why" behind why companies work with recruiters currently, and what impact the lack of a recruiter would have. What you've described in your post is more or less just a job board where a company would post a job and people would apply. It seems to me that some of the work that recruiters do is perhaps filter out unsuitable candidates, such that the hiring party doesn't have to spend time interviewing candidates that wouldn't work out. If your solution maybe addressed the "problem" of optimizing the match between companies and suitable candidates for a job, that might be a value offering more attractive to both employers and contractors.
To summarize, consider the role that a recruiter does and what value they bring from BOTH the perspective of an employer and contractor to better understand how you could meaningfully automate their work through a software product.
I know this strays a bit from your original business idea, but hope it's been helpful feedback nonetheless
In the United States there are platforms like Toptal https://www.toptal.com/ and Gun.io https://gun.io/ that come to mind that do something similar. From my understanding, the value they bring is that additional layer of vetting of candidates before the match is made.
