I've been an Indie Hacker for 3 years now.
1st year - full-time employee plus part-time IH - worked over the holidays every day as I was trying to get my side hustle up and running and profitable asap so I could quit my job. Was definitely worth the sacrifice.
2nd year - full-time IH (yup, my own boss, at last) - worked over the holidays every day because I had xmas promotions running and my site crashed. Wanted to get it up and running asap. The intention had been to have 2 or 3 days off. Difficult to have more than that as a solo founder.
3rd year - this year. I now have a freelancer working for me and they come from a country that celebrates the holidays at a different time of year so can work and which means I could technically have a week off work as I trust them to keep things ticking over. But, you know what? I know even if I say I'm going to have a week off, I'll be checking sales, stats, the website etc. In a good way, my business is my baby.
Interested to know what other IHs are doing?
Are you using this time to get ahead with your project/product/business or taking much-needed time off?
what is this holiday period you speak of?
As an Indie Hacker, my intentions for the holiday period depend on the year. In my first year as an Indie Hacker, I worked over the holidays every day because I was trying to get my side hustle up and running and profitable as soon as possible so I could quit my job.
I dont follow the work week, find it hard to join other friends to 'unwind' as the weekend hits coz, everyday is like a weekend :)
Strive for work-life integration, work really focussed, give it all and take a break, go for a hike and then work again!
The run-up to Christmas will be extremely busy for me, but I'll be having Christmas Day and Boxing Day off. Then New Year will be busy before January hits a quiet period - that will be my proper holiday.
Absolutely. I've had to wear multiple hats in the process of building my product.
Since it's the holidays, I realize that a lot of the businesses that I'm writing to aren't particularly ready to make key marketing decisions at this time of the year. (My product is a performance-marketing platform).
So I'd spend the rest of the holidays finishing up the product and launching the private beta by January.
Fun times ahead, I guess.
Full time employee and part time IH, I'll be working on my project as much as I can!
As indiehacker I want to work on my project 24/7.
F/t employee and p/t IH. I'll be working over the holidays to get ahead with my app. Hoping to launch in the new year. The race is on.
I'm definitely on your path, Ryan.
RN I'm mixing full time & IH, so would spend holidays on my project.
Hopefully next year I'll get to freelancer :D
We will be continuing our marketing activities and handling user issues, don't wanna lose users due to some error that we didn't solve on time.
Any new developments will be kept on hold during that period.
I use holidays and weekends to get ahead. While being there for my team in normal working weeks, I really can't wait for some focus time on my own to get my strategic to-dos done. So holidays are holy for me - but I also try to be in deep work there, working some hours super-focused, so I can enjoy some time off too.
I am a No Days Off entrepreneur. My brain will not allow for a full day off. I am always thinking of ways to improve my fitness monetization app, or writing articles, books, research, mentoring, podcasting, etc. I absolutely love it all!
I used to work for pretty much 3 years straight when I built my first company.
Now at Nango I force myself to take at least 2 vacations of 2 weeks a year.
Two reasons:
1.) Building a business is a marathon
For me this means I need time off. A week at least. It takes me time to really disconnect and think about other things. If I just take 3-4 days off I am back before I fully disconnected.
Timing wise: Hardly any better time in the year than when 80%+ of my customers are also taking time off :) (granted my business is B2B and not seasonal)
2.) I have found vacations to be a net positive for my business.
Me spending time away from my company helps the company. When I come back I look at things with fresh eyes. And with some distance I find it much easier to see the bigger picture. Strategic insights, e.g. which milestone or metric truly matters in the next 12 months above all else, often come from time spent away from the desk for me.
Last but not least, as nice side effect it also shows where things break. As I strive to not be operationally involved in the business in the long run this really helps as well.
Yes. I love working while most are on vacation, and vice versa.
I'm just taking some time off during the holidays. Down time is just as important as work time in my opinion. Just so you don't burn yourself out.
I'm working on our project Churnfree. We are constantly improving our project to help our customers; we are not taking many holidays but mostly spend time on our work.
Now, our main goal is to make our project successful for SaaS businesses and membership businesses, so they can grow their businesses and reduce churn.
Hope we will mostly automate our work in the next year.
Yes: We just came out from a bad year due to our business being bootstrapped to our country and the country facing numerous national strikes from a variety of sectors, leaving us without a single dollar of revenue in multiple months. (we were not the only ones affected. the whole country is facing a major economic slowdown).
So we are revamping our business model and trying to enter de B2B SaaS market but for businesses that offer essential services (eg: private schools). So
our goals for 2023 are:
create a compelling product aimed at schools since this is an essential service that will not stop no matter the country's situation
Sell to at least 3 schools to give us a surplus of cashflow so that in the event of a money drought we are sure we have enough money in the bank to sustain operations.
if all goes right. expand to create B2B SaaS products for other businesses that offer essential services that can survive national strikes.
Burnout risk is maybe the most important risk for an indie hacker. Once you spend your energy till you have none left, it's hard to climb back up.
So, depends on my energy levels.
Will be working more than ever this holiday season. Working on a side project launch on product hunt this week, with one more product launch planned for December end. Super pumped.
It ultimately depends on your goals and priorities. Some people may choose to take time off over the holiday period to rest and recharge, while others may see it as an opportunity to make progress on their Indie Hacker projects. If you do decide to work on your project during the holiday period, it's important to make sure you're taking breaks and taking care of yourself, both mentally and physically. It's also important to keep in mind that other people may be taking time off as well, so you may need to adjust your expectations accordingly.
Pretty much the same thing! I can't step off of taking care of my child.
I'll most definitely be continuing my marketing and awareness push during the holiday period. Even though it's tough and slow going at the moment, I'm excited to reach my goals for the coming months.
Even though I'll be doing some work every day, I'll be working while on the move and enjoying the holiday season at the same time.
