As (aspiring) entrepreneur: are you working on building an personal brand?

I see more and more developers consciously building a personal brand on Twitter or other social media.
Is that something you are also working on or thinking about?

To me, the phrase "personal brand" seems like it was supposed to be a satire on neoliberalism's obsession with everything being a market and nobody got the joke. However I do (because of an old Kickstarter campaign where some kid wanted to develop his portfolio) have a logo and basic "design language" that I use for many personal projects that get to a stage where styling is important. And I make sure to quickly vet my blog and social media posts to make sure that's the person I want to be, instead of just "emoting on people," so to speak. That's probably close enough, for most interpretations, but I'd never call it a brand.

Yea, it could possbily have been haha. I first started to hear the term with the "fake make money online" gurus. Which gave a sort of weird feel about the term. But then I was able to realize that it's not really a bad thing, it is sort of like a tool. But what your intentions are and what you do with it determine the goodness of it.

Or it could have been that people were trying to make brands feel more personal, and then someone just switch the order of the words and a whole new genre of marketing came out of it.😅

I've been more conscientious about it as of late. Recently I had my first Twitter follower reach out to me and tell me that they downloaded my app!

(I'm not a developer, but I think the same applies to every path)

It really depends, like, it depends on what you want to do. If you are planning to build something for "X" in the future, then you have to have a personal brand that gets the attention of that "x". x = the target market.

But if you would like to maybe get gigs, then building a personal brand that with the intented target audience being potential clients it's a good idea. Or you can have both too.

It's never bad to have an audience, you just have to make sure it's the right audience for what your product/service is.

I started working on newsletter but also would be great to start working on twitter to power up each other

I really want to do this, but no content ever feels good enough to publish.

Can you describe this feeling a bit more?
What would it take to make you feel confident enough to post it?

Part of it is that I don't want to spam content that you can already find elsewhere. The most annoying form of spam to me is almost all of dev Medium and articles such as "2021 Angular vs React comparison".

On the other hand, there are very few things that somebody knows that you can't already find in other places if you are genuinely interested in researching a topic, and not just scanning a listicle.

I have a very hard time figuring out where the line is where something is worth publishing.

Indeed. All new ideas are essentially a rewrite or remix of older ones.

Would using a pseudonym instead of your real name make you more comfortable?

I haven't thought about that, but it feels unlikely. I don't have a fear of embarrassing myself or something similar, just lack of sense for whether something is worth reading and if there's an audience for a particular topic at a specific level of expertise. 🤷‍♂️
