Ask IH: Are you part of any paid community?

Have you been part of paid communities? If yes, which ones and why are you still subscribed to it.

Yes. MegaMaker (great and lifetime deal) and MakerPad (good and lifetime deal). NOMADlist (lifetime deal)

To me the lifetime deal is the only Way it makes sense to me to join these things. Subscription fatigue, interest cycles etc.

    www.gradschool.co

(I've been part of a few paid communities before, but not stayed longer than one cycle/month)

This one is recently launched, but the community brings good value to the table, given the backgrounds/experiences of the current members and the people behind the community.

They've got good deals on tools + live office hours which is nice as they actually help

You shouldn't be referring to them as they when you are part of the team. It is misleading.

Happy to have you aboard Deep 🙏

After leaving Silicon Valley earlier this year I missed the hustle and bustle of the startup community that permeates throughout SF. I tried several paid communities and they all sucked so I decided to build GradSchool.

Everyone can join the community (which is still a work in progress as we just launched) totally free. The only reason to pay is if you want the more intimate version of the community or for more facetime/support during office hours or workshops.
We negotiated software deals and discounts to offset the price of the membership as we want to provide as much value as possible. I'm hoping everyone who signs up thinks it's worth way more than $30/mo.

Agree with what you said! :)

  3. 2

phlywheel, yeah. have you heard of it?

  4. 2

    Yep, WIP.
Don't know exactly why I joined it, I thought that I'll get some insights and support there I guess

    1. 1

...and are you getting the expected value? Personally, I've considered joining in the past although I never did :)

      1. 2

Hmmmmm, well, you might get something out of it if you start talking there but in my opinion it's the same as free communities.

Eg, there are 2 main communities I know: makerlog & WIP. First free second paid. First is more active.

So if you have spare money, I'd join, but I don't expect tooo much from it. It's kind of a chat where you can find friends, but the chat is paid :)

According to you is there a particular domain related products that gain more from the community than others?

          1. 2

Don't know. But the community could give you support when you launch somewhere.

No. Not being part of paid communities seems like an easy rule to follow to avoid many problems. Maybe there would be exceptions worth the cost.

I was wondering especially about Medium. I do not subscribe to it, but I have second thoughts. What do you think ?
