Ask IH: Digital nomads, which telco are you using?
Getting a new number for every country you stay a while can be a pain, but sometimes having a local number is super useful. On top of that, roaming fees can be high if you don't have access to WiFi all the time. So, what's your go-to telco provider?
It depends on the country! I stick to places with excellent broadband/mobile speeds (basically all in East Asia). I do 30 day prepaid SIMs and make sure I have at an all you can eat package since I transfer ~100gb/month.
Did you think about getting Google Fi?
Nope.
I also use Google Fi and pretty happy with it, though last time the connection was quite spotty in Turkey. I think you can get the same kind of world-wide internet roaming with a plain T-Mobile, no real need to sign up for Google
Yeah, I also use Google Fi - I was living in the States so it was easy to get it for me. I know there are ways to get it also if you live somewhere else, but it seems complicated.
I was just thinking that we need something like a Revolut for Phones - that would be super useful for me and I'm guessing also for others.
I enjoyed Google Fi while traveling/working around Europe last winter. $10/GB and automatically just doing the right thing was super nice. Technically without Google Fi, I wouldn't have realized that I was in Austria for exactly one stop on my train from Zurich to Munich. Then again, I lived in Barcelona some years back and just got a local number on a SIM card. YMMV, depends on where you're traveling and how long you think you'll be there.
