Ask IH: How much traffic is needed to get a sponsoring deal for a niche app?

Hi everyone,

I need your help figuring out if my app is ready to attract potential sponsors.

I built YT Tracker, an iOS (only) app for YouTubers to track their progress towards the new monetization goals to generate revenues from ads on YouTube.

Today I have few thousands monthly active users and I was wondering if I should start searching for a sponsor to bring my monetization effort to the next level.

Since my community is very niche and highly targeted (only YouTubers), I was wondering if you had tips on how to find sponsors and how much traffic would be considered enough traffic for potential sponsors?

Thanks in advance.
Edouard

Start reaching out to potential sponsors early. Try building personal relationships with at least 3-5 company decision makers who could be a match.

We talked to at least 5 companies very early and elaborated premium sponsorship deals. In the end it took > 14 months to agree and ~ 2 yrs to materialize as a bank transfer. But due to good relationships we are within year 3 of a good yearly sponsorship relationship.

If we monetized our traffic on visits / clicks alone we would be nowhere near the current sponsorship revenue.

So dont bother too much with numbers and prioritize personal relationships...

Thanks Patric, definitely a great advise. I never thought things could take that long but it's great to know so I can set my own expectations. I guess I'm going to spend quite a bit of time on LinkedIn in the coming months. Thanks again.

Few thousands of highly targeted users is enough to do something nice in my opinion. ;)

I think you should just start talking with SAAS tools for YT makers for example (maybe even start with their affilate programs maybe for start to validate idea).

Thanks Matt. Affiliate is definitely a good option. I just need to double check if that's ok with Apple's guidelines for iOS apps.

I'm planning to look at a few tools but my app being a tool in itself, I don't want to cannibalize too much but products for YouTubers (gear etc...) could also be interesting to consider I guess.

      Thanks for the tip :)
