Ask IH: Is our pricing structure right?

Hi all!

We just started some new experiments on our pricing structure to see how potential paying customers would react.

Our service: https://smartip.io is an IP Geolocation API and we are currently offering the following tiers:

  • Free Tier: up to 250,000 req/mo
  • Startup Tier: up to 1.5 Million req/mo for $40/mo
  • Pro Tier: up to 10 Million req/mo for $150/mo
  • Enterprise Tier: need to contact us to discuss

Considering that this is a pretty cluttered market where a lot of services just wrap maxmind data into a different form and charge a fortune just for that, we are trying to be as much competitive as possible.

What do you guys thing about the current pricing structure?
Any suggestions?

Following your suggestion and feedback from some of our customers, we are considering to change our pricing structure decreasing the price of the Startup tier and adding a new tier Business which will cover for an higher API request quota.

Here it is what we plan on doing:

      • Free Tier: up to 150,000 req/mo
      • Startup Tier: up to 1.5 Million req/mo for $20/mo
      • Pro Tier: up to 5 Million req/mo for $90/mo
      • Business Tier: up to 10 Million req/mo for $150/mo

This should cover a wider range of developers from indie devs up to medium/large companies.

Any feedback would be highly appreciated.

          Very good point.
Here it is what we are going to do:

          • Free Tier: up to 125,000 req/mo
          • Startup Tier: up to 1 Million req/mo for $20/mo
          • Pro Tier: up to 5 Million req/mo for $90/mo
          • Business Tier: up to 10 Million req/mo for $150/mo

The idea is to start with a ratio of 1/20 between cost and number requests and then decrease such ratio even more moving up tiers.

          Thoughts guys?
