Looking for feedback on an idea...
Is there anybody out there who uses Docker that might be interesting in a light touch solution for running docker images?
Obviously there are plenty of Docker service providers out there, but the app I'm thinking of is intended to simplify the process - you'd just specify a docker image, some ports to open, some environmental variables and hit a big button that provisions and runs it for you.
The idea here is that it takes away a lot of the complexity of provisioning machines - it would basically be a serverless solution.
Really keen to hear if this is something that people would find this helpful and would use the service, and if there's any additional features you'd like to see. Alternatively, if you think this is a product that offers nothing new over existing solutions, then I'd appreciate your brutal feedback :)
Thanks in advance!
Chris
Somewhat similar to what we do at https://github.com/dokku/dokku
Kind of, but this app would also provide the hosting for you
Sounds interesting! By "runs it for you", what do you mean? Automatic scaling, load balancing etc? How would you handle dependencies between containers?
Email on profile - would be happy to chat :)
Thabks for your reply. The general idea is that it just runs the docker command, so you could have a dockerized web app which the app would let you deploy very quickly, without having to worry about provisioning servers
I hadn't really considered load balancing and auto scaling yet - in my head this is something that you'd do externally, but maybe it's worth considering.
I'm planning to use docker-compose on the backend - you would have the option to deploy multiple containers to one instance, and link them all together, as part of the configuration options
