Ask IH: need to monitor Reddit, Hacker News, IH for certain keywords. Any suggestions how to do it effectively?

I would like to start monitoring popular technology/entrepreneurship groups for specific topics. Daily search thru takes to-o-o-o much time. Any tools or aggregators you would suggest?

EDIT: after looking at different solution I ended up building my own prototype at http://54.208.112.24/. Works well for me. Let me know if you find it useful.

I checked your proto but it does not seem available anymore. Did you turn it into a real product eventually?

I use kwatch.io for keyword monitoring on Reddit and HN, but I would also like to monitor other sources they don't support, like Facebook and Instagram.

    Thank you!

Second the suggestion for syften (https://www.syften.com/)
I use it to monitor IH, HN, reddit, and other sites.

Thank you @skmurphy, @aminmemon. I have looked at Syften, it sends me alot of results - tough to get thru... then in a spirit of IndieHackers I tried to to put something together on my own.

Any chance you can look at the draft of my version here (sorry, it has no name, no branding and still responds to IP http://54.208.112.24/). Would you use it? Can it be improved?

        Thanks a bunch!

          Two points:

          1. Syften has the most powerful text selection language I have seen. If you are a software engineer I would encourage you to learn the how to better craft your syften queries.
          2. The spirit of IndieHackers is to launch differentiated products that will sustain viable businesses.

Thanks Sean - all valid poits.

My intent was to make something more convenient and more about what's happening now.

Can I ask one question please... What do you use syften for and how often? Thanks alot for your time.

I monitor keywords related to opportunities and threats for various teams I work with: BeamWise,TrafficParrot, nrwl to name a few. I get reports on a daily basis that I find useful.

I don't know how you define "what's happening now" but the items are new that day. At this point syften meets my needs.

Edit update: @javadiagrams I did not realize you asked the original question. I think it's cleaner just to post you have developed something than pretend you are asking for real input. I would not have replied to a post announcing a new tool, but I did reply to your question asking for help with syften because I thought you had a real need.

Hey Sean, great work on skmurphy.com - you have expertise in the area I still have to lean.

Anyway, I was honest with my original post - I asked the question, did not find what I was looking for and (after a long weekend of coding) came up with the tool I asked to review. Sorry if it came out as a ploy to get attention.

I guess my original idea was to provide a tool to find relevant conversations "happening now" rather than analytics tool.

Thank you for your response. Maybe and let me know if you see any opportunity in the area of professional media monitoring. Building a saas beyond simple search might have some value...

I see a lot of potential for https://sourcespy.com/ to to assist in migration from monolith to microservices. For example do what Scrivener does for text and provide a flat view of code from different modules in calling hierarchy in context. Identify a code in monolith you plan to re-architect into a microservice and examine implications. I think the opportunity to leverage diagrams and other visualizations to facilitate rapid understanding of software systems is still early days. I will contact you directly to walk around issues.

    You should try F5bot → https://f5bot.com/

It basically send you an email whenever one of your keywords is mentioned on Reddit, Hacker News, or Lobsters.
Reddit is a super useful tool to get some traffic, I personnaly miss a tool which can extract the list of the keywords by subs!
It would be super valuable to get the tendancies!

      Interesting link, thanks for sharing!

Hello @xavier, thank you for the reference! I have looked at it, but thought maybe I can make something better... Any chance you can look at the draft of it here (sorry, it has no name and still responds to IP http://54.208.112.24/).
I would really appreciate to hear what you think.
      Cheers!

That's great to have a preview, but the F5bot allow to subscribe to keywords.

looks good! just signed up to try it out!

Seems like an interesting idea. In the past, I used custom scripts to monitor hackernews and r/SideProject. May be developing it into a SAAS would be a viable option.

    1. 1

It seems like it... I should prototype it in spare time. Thanks!

Can I have the link please? Didnt find anything on google...

I haven't come across any yet. But I have search queries bookmarked with 'Recent' filters. I open them all at one shot in the morning once and then once in the evening. It needs little scanning though. Takes about 15 mins each time. I have these for Reddit, HN, IH and Slack Groups (alerts are shown when a specific keyword is used).

    1. 1

      Huh, interesting... Thanks for advice!

I've built a side project software for Hacker News which tracks posts based on certain keyword, it's the same idea that you are looking for but never launched it.

If you're more interested email me [email protected]

Oh, great to hear! Can I ask why you did not launch it?

      1. 0

I thought there was no demand, how much would you pay for such a service?

I discovered Famm.io on Product Hunt a few weeks back. I setup my account, but haven't dived too deep into it yet. Although, I seem to be having problems loading their website now.

Oh, finally something close to what I was looking for... at least based on the description. I'll check it out when they bring the site up. Out of frustration I started building my own. Thanks for the tip!

  7. 1

i was going to mention f5 bot...but...is already mentioned.

  8. 1

    Google keyword alerts?

    1. 1

I'm afraid these are delayed and too generic for my very specific use... I need targeted groups with very specific keywords and quick pickup.
