Ask IH: Ruby & JS developer tool pricing page feedback, ideas, brainstorm

If I could help you because you run developer product as well feel free to ask questions or post your ideas in this thread. We could brainstorm here. It would be great to talk :)

Knapsack Pro is a developer tool to help Ruby & JavaScript engineers to run tests faster on CI thanks to an optimal split of tests among parallel CI servers to ensure you run tests as fast as possible on your CI.

https://knapsackpro.com/pricing

I have plans like:
micro - $29/mo - up to 10 minutes tests, up to 50 parallel CI nodes
small - $50/mo - up to 30 minutes tests, up to 50 parallel CI nodes
standard - $79/mo - up to 1-hour tests, up to 50 parallel CI nodes
Professional - let’s talk
Heroku Add-on - it’s in beta so it’s free

I have also free ruby gem https://github.com/ArturT/knapsack that drives some leads.

I don’t have a free tool for JavaScript. I’m wondering about introducing a free plan. Right now only Heroku Addon is free because it’s in beta.

I had a free 14 day trial period counting only API usage days but sometimes it happened that it took more time for people to get financial approval from their management for expense so I decided recently to switch to unlimited trial so user account is not locked when the 14-day trial is exceeded.

What is the one thing that you would improve first?
Do you have any recommendations for this pricing page or in general regarding pricing for the developer tool?
Any thoughts about the free plan, should I introduce it?

If you have any additional questions I could provide more context about my product, please ask.

I’d like to improve the pricing structure to enable more developers the opportunity to use my tool and improve growth in the long run.

I'd say the pricing depends on your unit economics: don't do a free plan if that's costing too much money (although if that's creating a lot of opportunities it might be worth it, who knows).

Regarding the plan names, I think you should avoid "professionals" to contact you: I've often seen plan names like hacker/team/company. And then only the "Enterprise" plan gets the "let's talk". Note that I'm only suggesting you to change the name of the pricing. And the main reason is to show that your self-service pricing is ok for professional developers.

Regarding the Heroku Addon, you should try to work with a couple of users closely to get more information about what they like/don't like because they will give you better feedback that anyone here could! Also let them know that it's going to be a paid tool in the future so that they don't just ask random feature that they won't ever use.

In the end I think that talking to your existing users should give you more informed feedback, because they are the people using your software! So you might even forget about all my feedback and go talk to them 😅

    I hope it helps!

I've renamed the Professional plan to Custom name. Thanks again for the feedback.

Thanks for speaking up! Talking to users is the best thing to do.

I was curious for feedback from someone outside. :)

I've added a free plan that replaces the micro plan :)
