Ask IH: Stripe Currency Localization
Hello IH,
We are using Stripe from India (Early User from Stripe India)
We are working on building a SaaS app that will be available globally.
Our base plan price is in USD and Stripe India is currently not accepting USD payment from Indian Customers.
Stripe India doesn't offer currency localization and wants us to create 2 different plans, 1 in USD for the global audience and the other in INR for Indian audience and then serve the plan accordingly to the base country of the user.
We are looking for Subscription Management Apps that can help us do this on our behalf which will support currency localization or can help with the above problem in any other manner?

Why not just follow their advice and create two plans of different currencies? Then on the homepage, use a simple/free IP lookup API to the country of origin for your users and display USD price for all non India originated traffic. This is what I do for my project, except it's between USD/CAD. Send the Stripe plan currency as part of the registration call so you can create the stripe customer in the right currency. No need to pay for a subscription management service!
We use a subscription management service (Chargebee) and it doesn't get you out of having to make these decisions. We're starting with just USD plans (we include the currency in the plan name, like "PRO-USD-49" so we can easily differentiate and pull the display currency from the slug / subscription name.
We're going to expand from the US to UK, Canada and Australia first, but they need to subscribe in USD. We haven't figured out how to easily do refunds in the local currency and ensure they match-up for accounting purposes. @lunchbag - how do you handle this?
Hi @tela! Happy to help, but not sure I fully understand here. Are you charging in USD, but wanting to refund in the local currencies (AUD, GBP, CAD)?
That's actually a great idea. Which free IP lookup service are you using?
There's a ton if you just google "ip lookup api", they are usually free up to a certain number of monthly calls and for non-production use! ipdata.co is a solid choice
