Ask IH: Tools to do keyword research?

Hey IH,

I am starting to work on our keyword research / internal landing pages for our website. What tools are you using to improve on-page SEO, research keywords, etc?

Well there are all the premium "usual suspects" at -
    https://ahrefs.com/
    https://moz.com/
    https://www.semrush.com/
    https://kwfinder.com/ (interviewed here - https://www.indiehackers.com/interview/riding-out-failures-to-bootstrap-a-25k-mo-saas-company-19f3172f86 )

If you're looking for a free solution, Google has its own keyword planner here -
    https://ads.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/

Or you can use this tool from Neil Patel -
    https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/

I have an unpopular opinion about this.

If you are not an SEO specialist and are short on time and money I would stick with the standard Google Keyword Planner.

It won’t give you a precise number, but since you should focus more on topics rather than keywords (especially after the Hummingbird update) that approximate range will be more then sufficient.

ubersuggest is pretty good. We use it for our clients projects and helps to be more precise. If you require any help from SEO and social media marketing, we are here to help!

agree, ubersuggest is the best free alternative that can compete with paid alternatives and is even better than some of them.

    Ahrefs and KWFinder.

Ahrefs is significantly better than KWFinder, but KWFinder wins for the price.

I'd get the trial version or a month of Ahrefs and just crunch all your work in that time frame.

We also ran some tests against other tools so that's how we came up with them "being the best"

You can read more about it here if you'd like: https://www.humanproofdesigns.com/keyword-difficulty-checker/

I can't agree more with all the tools that were suggested above - love Semrush and use it on a daily basis (paid plan). Would like to add https://answerthepublic.com/ - helps you to get content ideas based on the questions people ask (I actually use it to come up with ideas for subtitles) and there's a brilliant technique how to find the most popular questions on Quora

    • go to Quora Ads Manager
    • create a new campaign (no worries, you will not spend a penny)
    • fill in the campaign name (Test1), choose campaign goal (Awareness)
    • set a budget (idk, 10 bucks)
    • press the Continue button and continue on the Ad Set tab
    • in Primary targeting section choose Question targeting
    • can see the pop-up Add question? If yes put your keyword(s) there (separated with comma) and press Continue. You'll see the list of questions with these keywords and the number of weekly views (aka popularity)
    • copy the most interesting questions into your spreadsheet
    • that's it, you're brilliant ;)

Not exactly an answer to your question but I highly recommend starting here: https://growandconvert.com/top-content-marketing-articles/#contentstrategy

This will save you years of wasted SEO efforts.
