Ask IH: Using a landing page with a waitlist: Yey or Ney?
Hey folks, this is my first post here at IH :)
What is your take on using a landing page with a wait list to validate if there's an audience for your idea? I have mixed feeling, It seems weird to start building something before having a target audience and the earlier you expose your work the earlier you're able to get feedback. On the other hand if you haven't started building your product you may not know some decisive factors that will pop up when launching.
Please share your thoughts, also if you went thought this process when launching you products I would love to read about your experience
Personally, I'm not a fan of waitlists unless it's due to scaling issues.
I don't want to wait to see whether I'm going to like a service that might be available sometime in the future. If scaling is not an issue, then just let users have at it. User signup and retention will validate (or invalidate) your idea, not the number of people on the waitlist.

Thank you for your answer. If I may ask for one follow up, do you know other means to validate your idea in earlier stages, before launching your product?
Post the idea on IH. This is not the best test but you'll still get good feedback.
The better test is find online community (reddit, fb group, etc) that is made up of your target audience. Make a post about the problem you are trying to solve that will benefit those users. They'll tell you whether you are on the right track.
