Ask IH: What's your best resource for creating basic but unique graphics / icons when you're not a designer?
Hi!
I am mainly the developer type that dabbles in design as needed. To take my work/content to the next level, I would like to spice it up with images/artwork/icons.
Anyone else in the same boat that has a goto process for getting this done besides just knowing/hiring a graphics person?
On top of that, it would nice if there was something that, given time, would be an aquired skill the longer we used it (versus go here, click and download).
For example, I use https://excalidraw.com/ for mockups and I get faster each time I do one but also more creative...

Everything above is very helpful, any maybe what I am thinking doesn't exist (or the closest thing might be figma/canva?), but I am thinking of a way to actually create a unique image/icon.

I just came across this site that may be more in line with what I was searching for, and wanted to share if others had need:
It lets you "create" your own illustrations in a way:

They allow svg download and you can edit them as you prefer :)
I like https://www.flaticon.com and https://www.vecteezy.com for graphics and icons.
We also use https://materialdesignicons.com a lot.
Recently, though, I discovered https://icon-sets.iconify.design/ - it lets you search across a lot of different icon sets.
This kinda feels more of what I am looking for but it's for svgs only:

and it's like good ole MS paint, so you can't necessarily just whip something up if you did try to draw something.
My go-to resource for icons is https://www.glyphicons.com. Nice & simple sets, all providing vector and bitmap files.

I like flaticon for icons. But if you use Figma you can browse the catalog ('Explore') and find icon packs and templates from the community :) I think the Figma approach is best since it's embedded & pretty easy to add to your own work
For icons, big fan of Font Awesome. Big library with lots of different styles and easy to translate for development.
For graphics, I sometimes use icons8 illustrations (they have a customizing option so maybe that's what you're looking for in terms of acquired skill) or undraw.co

My favorite resources are Envato Elements, Design Cuts, and Freepik/Flaticon.
You can get a year-long, all access pass to Envato and Freepik for about $150 each. Totally worth it, and that's coming from someone who can create all this stuff himself haha.
