Asset(ish) Tracking

I am more to rationalize if this is just my OCD or is this a real need as I keep coming back to this. A lot of people use excel(like myself) to track items they own or business assets. I keep trying to think of why people would want to use something more then excel to manage items like this from a personal or business level.

For example, my wife has a bunch of equipment for her business that she uses. She has sticky notes to reminder her of maintenance and what version XYZ is running. I cringe at this being a person in technology but she does not want to change.

I did hack together a collectible toy tracking site for people to track pre-orders previously but i could not keep up with all the new toy releases that come out plus trying to work on adding stuff from the past as well. I shelved it but i keep coming back to the idea.
