Would you be interested in improving your listening skills? - Free for IHers

I plan to put together a short email course on improving listening skills - actually I already have drafted most of it.

So what I would like to know whether that kind of offer may be interesting for the IH community? If so, what kind of topics would you like such course to cover? What kind of results you would like to see after completing such a course?

If there will be enough people interested, I can complete it in 2-3 weeks and share with people here in exchange for feedback on it or testimonial.

Hi Alex, I would like to read about listening skills. I can read draft and provide feedback . I think that this topic is not very well known, so your expertise and 'gut feeling' could lead ideation and continuous feedback on the work done could shape the final product.

      Hi Jana,

Indeed, most people I ask don't have any formal or even informal training on listening. And the books that have been written on the subject are not very famous.

And I appreciate your willingness to try out the course. I have some ideas on how to introduce people to the topic in distance-learning format but it would be really great to bounce them against a real audience and see what works and what needs to be tweaked.

Do you have any specific questions or interests about this subject which you want to be covered?

I will let you know when the course will be ready.

      Regards,
      Alex

        Hi Alex, no, as I don't have background I don't have questions/topics. For me chicken-egg problem :)

Wish you good luck with making the course.

I'd be interested. While I'm improved over time, I still catch myself thinking about my own, unrelated, ideas while listening in conversations.

    1. 1

      Hi Matthew,

That's a very common barrier to listening.

When in conversations, what you would like to do instead of thinking about your stuff?

      1. 1

What I'd like to do instead: LISTEN!

I want to improve at actively contemplating what is being said to me and what is meant by what is being said. I want to learn to pay more attention to how they're saying it as well.

I want to shut down my own unrelated thoughts. I want to shut down thoughts about what to say next. The latter, I've found easier to achieve than the former.

        1. 1

Thanks for elaborating. It seems like you have a pretty good understanding of what you want to improve. And that's a good place to start.

I will let you know once I finish the course.

          1. 1

            Looking forward to it, thanks!

              Hi Matthew,

Just a heads-up, I plan to finish the course mid next week. As soon as it's ready, I can add the email from your profile so that you start receiving your lessons.

              Alex

              1. 1

Awesome! Looking forward to it. Thanks Alex!

                1. 1

Added you to the list, Matthew. You should start receiving emails with lessons soon.

Hope you will find it useful!

                  1. 1

Great! I look forward to giving it a proper read. (when I'm not distracted) :)

I want to improve my listening skills, both for music and for Cantonese language.

    1. 1

Could you please explain a bit more what you would be interested in?

      1. 1

For music, I know I'm a bit old to develop perfect pitch, but I'd at least like very solid relative pitch.

For Cantonese, I want to improve my listening to where I can reliably distinguish all the phonemes with limited context (instead of just leaning on context and related languages.

        1. 1

I see. I wouldn't be able to help you with that. What I'll be doing is a course on listening as a communication skill.

But maybe the course I dabbled with a bit back in the days when I was trying to learn the piano can help you. As far as I remember, this guy's system was built around associating colors with different pitches. But please treat my reference with a grain of salt.

Hey, that is the kind of thing I was looking for (albeit in CD form)! Thanks!

    improving listening skills?
so that you can listen without falling asleep?

    1. 1

Improving listening can mean many things because listening consists of a lot of different processes and problems can be related to any of them.
Paying attention can be one of the problematic areas. In fact, it may be the hardest to address for several reasons:

      • people can have some form of ADHD
      • people can have deeply ingrained distractive mental habits (a lot of that cover in Deep Work)
      • not paying attention can be caused by beliefs such as 'listening is a waste of time' or 'I'm much smarter than them why should I listen to them?'
Having said that, some researches suggest that 70% of listening success accounts for the motivation to listen.

Other potential outcomes of improving listening can be:

      • managing internal dialog while listening
      • not interrupting
      • letting people voice more ideas and opinions
      • hearing deeper than of the surface level
        which in turn lead to
      • getting more accurate and impactful information
      • strengthening relations by showing people respect

I would love to learn more about this.

Primary to improve the way I communicate with customers, but it will help in my personal life too

          Hi Nicolás,

          Hi Nicolas,

Will let you know once it's ready.

Can I also ask in what way you would like to improve your communication?

          1. 2

As a founder I keep pitching the features of my product to whom ever I get in front of me. So much that one guy actually said, "if you stop and listen to me for a moment....i might actually be able to help you". Now I know that listening is an important part of pitching/sales and I am actively trying to learn how to.
