Not every Maker is trying to build a business. Like many artists, some build for fun and experience.
I think you're right! But many of us makers treat it like art, except that we want customers, and we want those customers to view our product like fine art, because who doesn't want to own fine art?!
We get stuck in the beauty of our product, forgetting that others might need a bit of "sales" (icky) to understand why they should use our art.
I think getting caught in the in-between is what dooms many projects. It certainly doomed some of mine.

Oh yeah! It started with a university hackathon and that bug of developing applications to solve community problems around me has been always a hobby since 10 years now!
I agree, but sometimes its frustrating to see people getting into tech simply because they want to make a lot of money. That's where this misconception comes from.
