Google Sheets would act like a great, no-setup database to serve as a CMS, conduct surveys, etc. To utilise this, Stein provides a straightforward API and helpers. It's currently in invite-only beta testing.

So is this going one step further than something like Sheety (https://sheety.co) which is purely providing a nice API to your google sheets?
Yes, but you could find a lot of differences here. Stein supports private sheets, all of CRUD & search functions (sheety just reads) and utlilties to make the work easier. (And Stein promises to be relaible to build actual stuff on!)

What kind of use cases can you see this being used for?
This could be used for a variety of services. People have considered building prototypes and products using this as the backend. This could also serve as a simple CMS. Quick registrations and surveys can also be powered by Google Sheets, as they are in the case of Google Forms. So this would also provide an easy way to create custom designed version of embedded Google Forms 🙂. Or maybe create a list on your website - links, menu, events, and so on.
