Bachelor's degree 🦸‍♂️️ VS Recommendation 🦹‍♂️️ - Which one will you hire?

Those of you who got the chance to hire employees.
Have you ever hired someone based on a recommendation of someone you trust?
What if the candidate doesn't have a degree? Does it matter?

Keep in mind that the recommendation isn't that the candidate is "cool."
Your friend suggests that he has a deep understanding of all the topics you are looking for in that position.
However, he didn't gain all of that knowledge through a university.

I can summarize the question in one line:
Bachelor's degree 🦸‍♂️️ VS Recommendation 🦹‍♂️️ - Which one will you hire?

I never hired someone before but I can testify that I personally got hired based on someone recommendation + portfolio.
So I'm not sure that recommendation is enough but that from my point of view.

    1. 1

Would you mind to elaborate on what kind of recommendation you got and what kind of portfolio you showed?

  2. 3

That one of the questions that bother me nowadays.
I'm considering if going to a university is the right choice for me.

Cant wait to see the answers...
I just join the community and already found a great posts that can help me =)

That is one of the biggest decision i ever made (I decided to go to a university)

I have hired around 10 people to my team and every single hire was based on real skills, attitude towards work and great culture-fit. Some people have degrees and lack any real-world skills and that's a huge warning and immediate no for me. We tend to say:

Open-minded and proactive beginner is far better than comfortable senior.

I'm trying to stay objective during the discussion, but I can't agree with you more =)

Depends on the person giving the recommendation. If the recommendation was given by one of the smartest engineers I know -degree doesn't matter at all.

This is why I heard that Googlers don't refer unless they have worked with you and can vouch for your skills.

So are you suggesting the one should expand his network instead of spending 3 years of university? (I exaggerating in purpose)

      1. 1

If you mean expanding network as in working on projects with other engineers instead of meeting people for the sake of meeting people, then yes.

But a degree does unlock a diverse alumni community, and engineering degrees also open up doors for immigration.

Recommendation >>>>>> degree or even working experience. I haven't pay much attention to candidates' degree when hiring, and even when I do, it's for the red flag (why are you spending your time and money on this instead of other options).

I would say that the answer is "depends"

If the task you are looking for the person is well aligned with the curricula of the Bachelor I think it is better to value more the person with Bachelor´s degree.

But, sometimes, the job is not exactly related to the curricula and it is most important to look at someone that has a good knowledge of the specific topics, regardless he or she has a degree.

In the company I work for, I have been surprised by the way some colleges with no degree work, sometimes they work better than other persons with degree.

At the end of the day, I would value more the attitude of the employee than the CV.

    I hope it helps

    Personal recommendation every time.

That said, I have a law degree and a few companies have "called it out" as being a bonus - play to your strengths!

    1. 1

May I ask what skill you have presented to them?

I interviewed people for a technical penetration testing position. I didn't care if they had a college degree or not although the person we ultimately hired did. It was because this person was clearly the best candidate out of anyone we interviewed.

He could not only explain technical concepts that were associated with exploiting specific systems, he participated in various competitions (so it wasn't just "tell me", but more like show me or prove it). I can't remember if he was recommended or not but for me - it's more about verifying their ability and aptitude.

Honestly, I wouldn't put much stock in either a degree or a recommendation. I would put them through at least one round of interviews, maybe more. I went through about 7 or 8 interviews just for one job back in 2006 and that included going out to lunch with the team once and dinner once.

By the way, there are lots of successful people working in the information security field without college degrees.

    1. 1

What kind of interviews have you made?

      1. 1

I was a hiring manager for an information security consulting practice. It was for one very specific position.

  9. 1

    Recommendation!

    1. 1

Have you ever hired based on a recommendation?

  10. 1

Portfolio + recommendation is more than enough (depends on the job)

    1. 1

      Hi Richard!
      What kind of portfolio?
What kind of a portfolio will a business wo.man without work experience can show?
