In no way I'd share the whole room I'm sitting in, who or what is in my house should be of no concert whatsoever to my employer: blurred or not, we're not talking about an office, but a personal house - there's no way that this could work more than the duration of a call; for that we already have plenty of great choices like zoom or meet or teams
Well, "Background.webcam" is just a name. Initially, I wanted to name it just "Background." But having such a one-word name creates difficulties. For example, you can't post an app to the app store with such a name.
Yeah this comes off as really creepy (from the trainee perspective). I agree with Primer, it's pretty easy to get into trouble here. However, I think it's still salvageable from a marketing perspective. We did do something similar in my old company with multiple conference rooms that had wide angle webcams. I saw your comment about mutual video sharing. Maybe you could "rebrand" this as a "magic portal" or something that lets you connect two rooms that are geographically far apart into something that feels like one room. Or at least just emphasize that the product lets you and a coworker feel like you're sitting next to each other while you work from home?
I guess I must strongly emphasize that the video is mutual. That's why it is a connection, not one-way surveillance. Thank you for your thoughts, Cory!
Ah yeah, that's the idea I think. I see from your landing page it sounds like some kind of strict training tool for managers. And as an employee who's an individual contributor it sounds like a real drag when you put it that way.
I think a good way to phrase it would be to say you can be online with an employee for training as if you were sitting next to them in real life. But with also the added benefit of privacy features that let you blur and mute them. Haha, marketing.
Well, I tried explanations like "as if you were sitting next to each other..." before, but people didn't get it. There are too many products out there pretending that they provide that. Nothing can replace sitting next to each other that's why it is just a mutual video connection. :-)
Interesting post...but would employees' webcams be running in the background the entire time they're working from home? How are you dealing with privacy issues?
Hello! The video is mutual only. Nobody can see others without sharing his own webcam.
And there are many other privacy features. Please check them out on the website.
Moreover, I don't see it being used the entire time. As an experienced developer myself, I can work remotely without a webcam.
But it can be used for working with a new remote developer during the trial period to get to know him and train him faster. Or with an inexperienced developer.

Well, the video is mutual. You can't be watched by an invisible man. it is surveillance when you are watched by a man who is invisible, not a video connection.
