Self-hosting a mail server in 2019

I went the MAIB (Mail-in-a-Box) route two years ago. I setup a DigitalOcean VPS to run it.

I don't recommend others do it either. And DigitalOcean highly recommends you don't use their platform to set one up.

The main reason is if you, like me, really don't know squat about building and configuring an email server you have to be ready to immerse yourself in the learning curve to do it right, and it's a long deep dive.

It took me a couple shots to get mine up and running and fully configured and then a couple more months to deal with emails being blocked or sent straight to the spam folder.

And MAIB makes all that a lot easier. I'm really glad I went that route. And it's a lot more than just an email server. It comes with a DNS server, automated SSL certs, the Roundcube web email client, NextCloud, and a "Status Check" app that notifies you of server updates and any issues it detects.

It cost me $20 a month to run my MAIB server. It doesn't take much to spend more on Gmail and I've got unlimited email accounts and full access to integrate email services with my apps.

For me, it's been well worth it.
