Balancing freemium apps free/paid features to optimize revenue

Hi guys !

I launched my app at the begining of the year and I'm getting a very positive feedback from the users.

The current problem is that they don't pay for the app, most of them just use the free features and that's it.

I've sent a poll to my users to understand the problem and it seems that for most of them the free features are enough.

So here is my current hesitation :

  • should I add new features to the premium subscriptions to make it more attractive ?
  • or should I restrict the current free version ?

What's your way of balancing free and paid features ?
Do you A/B test everything ?
Do you have other methods to determine this ?

Is there a way you can restrict usage based on volume? Like distance tracked or something? This allows people to try for free, but those heavy power users will be asked to upgrade their account. And since heavy users are the most likely to upgrade anyway, you should be some sort of conversion.

Yeah sure, I can restrict some usage a bit more but it's hard to guess the real effect of such changes on the download counts and the convertion rate.

That's why I was asking if it's a common thing to do some heavy A/B testing in order to determine what to do

Yeah sure, I was asking of general tips or methods so I don't have detailed my case but here is more info :

I built an app called Relief Maps it's a 3D GPS app for outdoor sports. (So B2C)
The app launched in January and reached 10K downloads in august, and I'm currently having 4K monthly active users.

The app free features are :

      • View the 3D maps worldwide
      • Plan routes (distance and time estimation on trails)
      • Record gps tracks
      • View stats about your GPS tracks (speed, distance etc)
      • Import GPX files

      The paid features are :

      • Additional maps (USGS maps covering the USA, and IGN maps covering France)
      • Offline maps features (download an area to be able to access it offline)

Some of the planned features are :

      • LiveTracking
      • Social features to share tracks and routes, follow other user's activity, share the current conditions on a route etc.
      • Improved stats to view your progression over months, years etc
      • paragliding features (as I have a lot of paraglider pilots in my users)

Most of my users are currently in Europe (I'm French)
A few of my concurrent so you can have an Idea :

      • View Ranger
      • Komoot
      • Fat Map

          Thanks for your feedback !

I should certainly look into making deals with sports brands for advertising yes. I'm wondering how much I could gain with 4K MAU 🤔

Meanwhile I'd like to increase my convertion rate on the existing user base and sell more premium subscriptions.

But I think it's difficult to do it without A/B testing everything.

Even completly different buisness models seems to be able to work! For example this app with quite similar features seems to make $20K/month

But it seems difficult to test such a wide range of changes in the buisness model
