Basing market research on Chrome Extension installs ?

Hi,

we are working on creating a product that is mostly used as Chrome Extension. Is it good idea to base market research on our competitors' Chrome Extension weekly users stats ? Most of our competitors provide Chrome Extension only to paying customers, hence I thought that given that, the number of users (shown in Chrome Store) should be more or less accurate and if we base our market research based on that (and even just using 30% of that to be on a safe side), we should have good understanding of the volume. And there is not one competitor, but 3 top ones and several more mediocre.

What do you guys think ?

I think it is ok. Depends on the extension. For example I have one with 10,000 users on the main app and only 1,000 using the extension. Or vis-versa. Moreover, people signed up can use the extension with only some people using a paid plan.

It depends on your comp but if public they may talk about their revenue. You can then look at pricing and see how many companies are paying for their service. Or sometimes CEOs just talk about it in podcasts etc.
