Be interesting, not strategic, when creating content online

I know my title might be a bit unclear, so let me quickly outline the difference between interesting and strategic.

Strategic: Your focus is on a predetermined outcome. Maybe you want to grow your audience or to find new customers for your product.

Interesting: Your focus is around the following questions:

  • Is my content interesting to my intended audience?
  • What would make this content more interesting?

The key difference is with Strategic content, your focus is self-serving and I've found that people are quite sensitive to that.

With Interesting content, your focus is on your audience. You are first checking if they would even want to consume your content, then you are making sure that your content is as helpful or engaging as possible for them.

This distinction may be super obvious and self-explanatory, but I think it plays a big part in who is ultimately successful in sharing content online vs not. And of course, this is a spectrum not black and white. So I mean to say that content that leans more towards being interesting vs strategic will generally be more successful.
