Beginner's guide to SEO: Starting a new website without rankings or traffic

Hello, Indie Hackers!

Just created a new website and found that it has no rankings or traffic? Don’t worry—every successful website starts from zero. Here are some steps to help you kickstart your SEO campaign and start gaining significant traffic.

  1. Keyword Research
First, conduct detailed keyword research. This will help you understand what your target audience is searching for and how to optimize your website content to match these search terms. Use tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ahrefs to discover high-search-volume keywords related to your industry.

  2. Quality Content Creation
Content is king. Creating high-quality, valuable content is key to SEO success. Make sure your content addresses user problems, provides useful information, and is easy to read and understand. Use SEO AI to assist in generating and optimizing your content for better results.

  3. Internal Linking Structure
Building a good internal linking structure can help search engines better crawl and index your website. Ensure all pages are accessible with a few clicks and use relevant anchor text to link to other related pages.

  4. Technical Optimization
Ensure your website is technically optimized. This includes fast loading speeds, mobile-friendliness, an SSL certificate, and a clean URL structure. Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to check and optimize your website performance.

  5. Backlink Building
Although this is a long-term effort, backlinks (links from other websites) are crucial for improving your website's authority and rankings. You can acquire backlinks by guest posting, participating in industry forums, and building partnerships with other websites.

  6. Utilize Social Media
While social media isn’t a direct ranking factor, it can help increase your website's exposure and traffic. Share your website content on various social media platforms and encourage user interaction and sharing.

  7. Regular Monitoring and Optimization
SEO is an ongoing process. Regularly monitor your website's performance using tools like Google Analytics and Search Console to see what strategies are working and what needs adjustment.

Summary

For a new website with no existing rankings or traffic, starting an SEO campaign might seem daunting. However, by systematically implementing the above steps, you’ll gradually improve your website’s visibility and rankings in search engines, ultimately gaining more traffic and users.

Hope these tips help you smoothly start your SEO journey! 🚀

tbh backlinks take a lot of time and investment but they do count for the DR so worth the effort.

Backlinks are no joke. But well worth the effort.

I’m wondering if any backlink will do as long as it has high DR or it must be backlinks for sites in one’s niche

      1. 1

Preferably one's niche. Or depending on your target audience, a wide area.

        Here's a breakdown:

        • High DR Backlinks: While high DR backlinks can boost your site’s authority, their effectiveness is enhanced when they come from sites relevant to your niche. A high DR backlink from an unrelated or low-quality site might not provide the same SEO benefits as one from a relevant, high-authority site.

        • Niche Relevance: Backlinks from sites within your niche or industry are generally more valuable. They not only improve your site’s authority but also signal to search engines that your content is relevant to that specific industry. This relevance helps with ranking higher in niche-related searches.

Just want to mention something that helped me a lot was getting a good SEO research tool. I found that Mangools was pretty awesome for the price. I thought SEMRush was a little too pricey, and had too many features for what I needed, which was a basic way to "shop around" for good keywords.

working on this right now! thanks
