Well if you're at the beginning stages and don't have much capital, a low-cost city with decent infrastructure/healthcare/etc. Just short of ideas...maybe try Nomadlist?
Most digital nomads work for someone else; was looking for city suggestions more suited towards bootstrapped founders.
If you're bootstrapping, the way of the digital nomad is a good model. I've been in Vietnam for over a year, and the low cost of living has given me financial peace of mind while bootstrapping my own business.
For the United States, check out cheaper, up-and-coming Midwest cities like Cincinnati, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids or St. Louis. Affordable cities with supportive entrepreneur communities.
Indianapolis Here! Startup I work for was bought by Microsoft last November. :)
Heck yeah! Midwest is underrated and offers so much value to founders/families.
I visited KC last year and was blown away! I might move there.
Wooooohooooooo midwest! Underrated if you ask me. Some good cities... but who needs a city when you're indie hacking? It's small-town life for me :)
Nice, I'm originally from Iowa. The thought of coming back to the Midwest area has recently come to mind. For someone who's been out of the Midwest for a solid 15 years at least, where might you suggest looking? Cities on my radar are Madison, Des Moines, Kansas City, Cincinnati. Would appreciate your thoughts.
Check out towns in the Driftless Area. It's beautiful in this area and lots of cool things happening.
Yup, one of those towns is actually where I'm from. (IA side)
Not sure why I can't comment to your last reply @midwestFounder, but I'm just just south of Allamakee, little city called Dubuque.
Hah, small world. Winneshiek or Allamakee?
Whilst not the cheapest city, I love living in Seattle!
Before product market fit ..
#1 choice: Where our target customers live, so we can pick their brains, talk to them and hone in on product market market fit.
#2 choice: The cheapest safe place short of my parent's basement (well maybe), to have a longest runway. Bali, Chiang Mai ??
After PMF ..
Where company taxes are low, it's relatively easy to set up a company (where future potential shareholders could invest in) and access to affordable skilled staff/hires is available.
Taipei! It's consistently ranked one of the top cities for expats.
We've got beautiful mountains, beaches everywhere, a gazillion coffee shops in the city to work from. And it's also perfectly located to explore the rest of Asia.
Also, one of the best healthcare systems in the world. Affordable food and rent. Reasonable taxes.
I'll be celebrating my 10th year in Taipei soon. Wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
tpe is awesome!
I would put it on my buckelist but my fear of Hong Kong / Ukraine style scenarios keeps me from it.
Georgia! Extremely affordable and a booming hub for entrepreneurship.
Tbilisi or Batumi?
Somewhere in Portugal or Estonia would be cool. Probably relatively affordable and very friendly to remote workers.
Caveat, I have been to neither
Being in Eastonia or any closer nation to Russia or Ukraine can be risky in these times.
If you're not an EU citizen or passport holder I would not suggest anyone without proper backup.
Good call. I regularly see Lisbon as one of the best spots for nomads.
Yeah, I can confirm Portugal is a good place. Also, you get great weather.
btw I live in Portugal
SF or Lisbon for me
For people living in the North America, I think Portland, OR is pretty nice. Just moved here, previously lived in Toronto, Vancouver BC, Bellevue, San Diego, Bay Area...
Hi there!
I think the best city in the world for indie founders is San Francisco, California. The city has a ton of resources for entrepreneurs and new businesses, including incubators, accelerators, and mentorship programs. It's also home to a lot of big tech companies, which means there are lots of jobs to be had if your startup doesn't take off (and even if it does). Plus, the weather is great!

I think it's hard to choose just one city as the best city in the world for indie founders, but I'd have to say that Berlin is my personal favorite.
Berlin has a lot going for it: It's got a strong tech scene, low costs of living and doing business, and a vibrant culture that attracts talented people from all over the world. It also has some interesting quirks, like its relaxed approach to work/life balance (and thus, work-life integration), which can make it easier for you to be productive as an entrepreneur.
If you're looking for an amazing place to start your business, Berlin is definitely worth considering!
I think the best city in the world for indie founders is London.
That's because it has a huge and diverse population, which means there are plenty of people who can be your target customers. It also has great support services and infrastructure for small businesses, like banks and accounting firms.
But what I love most about London is its culture—it's a city that celebrates art, music, and innovation, so if you're an indie founder who wants to make something new and exciting happen in the world, you'll fit right in!
At once I open for myself different places near Portugal.
I like this question a lot!
I've started my company a year ago and have been mostly living in Mexico (Mexico City, Merida & Puerto Escondido), now I'm back in Europe and looking to move to Portugal next month – will start with Lisbon and go from there!
Istanbul or Izmir/Turkey! Try searching for "Bostanli, Izmir" on google. I lived both of them now I live in Izmir. Many places in Istanbul are too crowded but Izmir might be a great option. There are many people coming from Europe etc. Nature is great here. Cost of living is low, especially for people earn dollars. This makes Turkey the best place to live for indie makers :) We're looking for a great place to live like Turkey, too. Great post to read
Will soon work from Izmir for about 3 weeks in bostanli karsiyaka area, was looking for coworking spaces / cafes to work from, do you have any recommendations?
Barcelona, excellent climate, excellent people, huge tech community, really excellent medical centers, really good public transport and other basic services. Also local people are good at English, because turists. Barcelona has airport with cheap flights to everywhere too.
I suggest Cracow - my hometown. We have here big developers community and also lots of job opportunities. Cost of life is not so high compare to other place in EU. And Cracow is beautiful place to live.
In the US, I would choose a smaller college town. They're cheaper than mainstream cities but still have decent infrastructure and amenities with an upbeat population that can spark innovation.
I would argue that towns are better — cheaper, easier to find community (though they probably won't be indie hackers), more access to nature, and way less hustle/bustle.
But ultimately, the best place for indie founders to live is where they feel inspired — doesn't really matter where that is, as long as it's where they want to be.
Do you need a city? When I think of low costs of living, I don’t think cities.
As long as there are co-workings?
It’s within a 45 minute drive. I just plugged in where I live vs. a city near me, and the cost of living skyrockets 37.3%. I just can’t say that the costs are worth the benefits.
I’d choose somewhere with the lost nomads and then from there attend founder meet-ups / make your own. Could be an ideas for a market segmentation actually! I agree - most nomads work for someone else (imo)

I think Newzeland is the best city in the world for indie founders.
Why? Because it's a small country, and small countries are better for startups than big ones. You see, when you're in a small country, you don't have to compete with other large companies—you can just focus on your own company. And in Newzeland, there aren't very many large companies—they're mostly small, too! That's why this is such a great place to start a company: it's got room for all of us.
Newzeland also has one of the highest rates of entrepreneurship in the world—and it's growing steadily every year. In fact, Newzeland has been ranked as one of the top five entrepreneurial countries by The Economist since 2011! If you're looking for somewhere where it's easy to start a business and grow quickly while building connections with other entrepreneurs and innovators, then look no further than Newzeland!
It's a tough question, but I think the best city in the world for indie founders is India.
I know what you're thinking: "India? What about Silicon Valley?" or "New York City?" It's true that those are both great places for startups, but what makes India special is its huge population and diversity.
There are over 1 billion people living in India, so there's a huge market for your product even if only a small percentage of them use it. And since India is so diverse, you don't have to worry about your product being well-received by just one group of people—Indian culture is incredibly varied and rich, which means that your product can appeal to many different kinds of people.
Finally, Indian businesses have an advantage when it comes to pricing their products because they don't have to pay as much overhead as U.S.-based companies do.
I think the best city in the world for indie founders is India.
There are a lot of people who start their own businesses in India because they want to be their own boss and not have to answer to anyone. That's why there are so many successful Indian companies out there right now. My favorite is [company name]. I love how they make amazing products that improve your health and well-being, but they also give back to the community by helping local schools and giving jobs to people who need them most.
I think that the best city in the world for indie founders is… San Francisco!
There's a lot of reasons why I think so, but one of the biggest is just how supportive the community is. It's a very tight-knit community, which means you can really get to know people and make connections. You'll meet other indie founders who are working on similar projects as you, and they'll be able to give you advice and share insights. You'll also meet investors who can help fund your business.
That said, I would say there are some disadvantages too: it's expensive! And if you're not careful you might find yourself spending too much time networking with other people instead of working on your business. So if you're thinking about moving here—make sure you have a solid plan first!
