The cancellation call took twenty minutes and a transfer to the retentions team, who suddenly found a discount nobody had mentioned in three years. What nobody tells you is how odd the first week feels — until you realise you are watching the same things for a fraction of the money. Here is exactly what I replaced it with.
No Card Needed
All Sports, One Subscription
After 7 months and 8 providers, this is what I no longer compromise on.
It holds at peak times, not just on quiet afternoons.
The channels you genuinely watch, live and in HD — not twenty thousand dead entries.
Two or three simultaneous streams, so the household is not fighting over one.
A programme guide that matches reality. Check it against three channels; if the guide is wrong, the provider does not control the feed it is selling you.
Support that answers a real technical question within the hour.
Almost every stall gets blamed on the broadband, and most of the time that is wrong.
Video copes badly with unevenness, not with slowness. A line showing a healthy average that drops out for half a second every minute produces exactly the freezing people blame on the provider. The opposite is true as well: a modest but steady connection — even a rural one still waiting on the fibre — streams beautifully.
The five-minute diagnosis: while the stream is stuck, open something else on another device. If it loads instantly, your line is fine and the problem is upstream. Then look at the clock. A connection does not degrade at the throw-in of an All-Ireland final. An oversold shared server does.
WOULD I GO BACK TO SKY?
No — and not for the reason you would expect. The money matters, but what I actually notice is having no contract, no equipment fee and no retentions call waiting for me at renewal time.
What I gave up: a physical box and a number to ring when it went wrong. What I got back: roughly €80 a month and a setup the whole house can use at once. Saorview is still plugged in for the odd evening the broadband goes down.
What I would do again: pay monthly for the first two months before committing.
The service that finally replaced Sky for me is Northpeaktv. No contract, no equipment fee, cancel whenever you like. Channel list, pricing and device guides are at https://northpeaktv.com — about three minutes to get going.
