Six years ago I swore I would never cancel Sky. The bill had crossed €100 a month and a neighbour kept going on about a box his brother-in-law set up for him. I laughed it off. Then the renewal letter arrived, higher again for the same channels, and I finally sat down and tested every IPTV service I could find.

After 17 months and 5 providers, this is what I no longer compromise on.
It holds at peak times, not just on quiet afternoons.
The channels you genuinely watch, live and in HD — not twenty thousand dead entries.
Two or three simultaneous streams, so the household is not fighting over one.
A programme guide that matches reality. Check it against three channels; if the guide is wrong, the provider does not control the feed it is selling you.
Support that answers a real technical question within the hour.
One thing: how many servers they run, and whether you can switch between them yourself inside the app.
A provider with several will move you off a congested route at peak time. A provider with one will politely explain that the problem is at your end. Ask before paying: how many servers, where are they, and can I change mine. Hesitation on any of the three is your answer.
Everything else — channel counts, 4K badges, lifetime deals — is noise next to that.
WOULD I GO BACK TO SKY?
No — and not for the reason you would expect. The money matters, but what I actually notice is having no contract, no equipment fee and no retentions call waiting for me at renewal time.
What I gave up: a physical box and a number to ring when it went wrong. What I got back: roughly €60 a month and a setup the whole house can use at once. Saorview is still plugged in for the odd evening the broadband goes down.
What I would do again: pay monthly for the first two months before committing.
The service that finally replaced Sky for me is Northpeaktv. No contract, no equipment fee, cancel whenever you like. Channel list, pricing and device guides are at https://northpeaktv.com — about three minutes to get going.
