Hi, I am interested in creating a website similar to the likes of Starter Story or Failory, where the focus of content is on interviewing individuals/companies. I was just wondering which website builder is the most practical/effective in achieving the same feel, look and functionality as these two websites.
Thank you!
I used Webflow to create my own interview site (Space Bandits) which was actually inspired by Starter Story, Failory and Indie Hackers (when it was just interviews).
I highly recommend Webflow for three main reasons:
Bonus: the showcase section has designs which you can take inspiration from and even some templates you can clone right into your own Webflow editor, making it easier to implement more complex designs.
I actually had the idea for my main side project but kept putting it off because I thought the only way to build it was to learn how to code a web app and a CMS. I had no idea that Webflow allowed you to set up data with just a few clicks. After I discovered that, I must’ve gone from nothing to an actual functioning website and my first interview within just a couple of days.
Honestly, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. If you have any questions or want to know about how to implement a specific feature, just give me a shout on here or via email :)
Wow! That was very helpful @sarwech. Will definitely start reading up on Webflow so I can start building my website in no time. Thanks a lot for the help!
You're welcome :)
Good luck and I'm here (got plenty of time) if you want to chat about it!
Hi! Did you use any pre-existing templates from Webflow for your website or did you do it all from scratch? :)
It was built completely from scratch. I only realised you could clone templates AFTER it was complete 😅. It helped to have an understanding of the Bootstrap layout (component -> row -> col) when setting up the basic structure. But I had a poor understanding of design and what makes a great UX.
To solve for that and determine the best styles (typography, colours etc), I went onto dribbble.com and used search terms relating to what I was working on (e.g. hero section, cards, list etc). Some of it is beyond many websites built with actual code but it was the #1 reference for my designs going forward.
It was tough at first because you don't know exactly what settings they used to get those effects but through a bit of trial and error I was able to figure enough out.
There are also Webflow UI kits you can purchase (like Cards 2.0 if that's something you're interested in. Haven't tried them out but might make some of the work easier.
Hope that helps but feel free to keep the questions coming :)
nice website
Thanks!
Failory is built in Webflow (I've worked with them on design over the course of the last two years) through my design service (DesignJoy.co), which is also built in Webflow. I would recommend Webflow beyond a shadow of a doubt due it's flexibility and CMS features. There is nothing that even comes close. Good luck!
I really like Webflow. It also has a rich community that allows you to build out your site when you're ready to. For example a popular stack to use is Webflow + MemberStack (Authentication, Memberships) + Zapier (the Glue).
Webflow. You'll be able to create a beautiful looking blog. Webflow also integrates with nearly every major marketing and automation tools.
Do you still feel this is the case even for total newbies?
Yeah. Given that your alternatives are Wix or Wordpress, this is a better bet.
Also, you have cloneable templates on Webflow and tons of tutorials. There will be a -learning curve of around 7-8 days if you use a template but it will be worth it in the long run.
Webflow and Ghost are worth a look.
That's a 2nd vote for Webflow. Will definitely check out Ghost. What would you say are the pros and cons of each platform? :)
I'm not an expert in either of them, more a dabbler.
I use the hosted version of Ghost, but it's open source, so if you have the skills you could host it yourself for cheaper. It also has a paid membership model.
Webflow has loads of integrations too, so long term you could build it up into something quite powerful. It's also more of a CMS, so more options in how to control the content and the ability to create different content types.
Thanks!
What platform was indiehackers built on?
I use Ghost for my site, www.nocsdegree.com
The ones I know and I've used: If its conceived as a one page project I consider Carrd, otherwise focus on Webflow, a little steep learning curve but I'm sure once you build there you will love it. Wordpress as a last resource. Bubble.io has a lot of fans on the no code space but i know next to nothing about it. Wish you success!
Why is wordpress the last resort? Don't a lot of people swear by it?
Just personal preference, actually I built my first two projects there.
