Best practices: Your landing page will likely convert 30% better if you use these 9 tactics

I'll make you a deal...

If you try these nine tactics... and... you don't see at LEAST a 30% increase in conversions, I will personally review your site and suggest how to improve it.

1\. Navbar: remove it or link further down the page

Landing pages should have one goal (leads, sales, etc.).

Navbars can distract users from that goal.

So, for your landing pages, either remove the navbar entirely, or---in the case of a long-form sales page---include links that take people further down the page (e.g. an FAQ section). This is a long-form sales page. The navbar links (e.g. "Pricing", "Testimonials") take you further down the page.

2\. Use black text on a white background

Too many pages are hard to read. Make it easy for your readers by using black text on a white background. Don't use images as a background, either.

3\. Use the same headline as the top-performing ad

Back in our consulting days, we used to call this "the cheat code" because it won so frequently in split tests.

The concept is simple: take your best-performing ad and use that EXACT headline on your landing page. This is referred to as "maintaining the scent" of the ad.

4\. Make a bold claim in your sales copy---and prove it with a testimonial

Good copywriting is a one-two punch: make a claim, then prove it. And there's no better way to prove a claim than a testimonial from a happy customer.A landing page with a bold claim and social proof. This landing page makes a bold claim---and the testimonial pays it off immediately.

5\. Add social proof and authority

Similar to testimonials, social proof helps build your credibility.

  • Use logos of your clients.
  • Use images of famous customers.
  • Highlight how many customers/reviews you have.

6\. Use a winning layout template

There are some proven templates. (Most layouts fail.)

Save yourself the hassle and use those.

7\. Use a simple, low-commitment, and benefit-rich CTA

Keep it simple.

Low-commitment + High-benefit = Effective CTA

  • "Buy now for $1,000,000" is high-commitment, but no benefit.
  • "Try it free for 30 days" is low-commitment, but no benefit.
  • "Start getting 50% more leads---free for 30 days" is low-commitment, and benefit-rich.

8\. Explain exactly what happens next after someone buys

You'd be shocked at how many websites don't tell visitors what to do on a website. They just assume that visitors know what they should do.

Do this now: review your website to ensure you are explicitly telling your visitors exactly what they should do next and why.

Look how Adobe tells users exactly what to do and why:

9\. Make it pass the "blur test"

Here's a secret design tip no one uses:

If you want to truly understand your design, blur your eyes. Even without focusing on the page, it should be clear what the page wants you to do next.

Try it for yourself and see.A blurred webpage; it should be clear what the page wants you to do next.A blurred webpage; it should be clear what the page wants you to do next.

Try these nine best practices to help improve your landing page conversions by up to 30%:

  1. Navbar: remove it or link further down the page
  2. Use black text on a white background
  3. Use the same headline as the top-performing ad
  4. Make a bold claim in your sales copy---and prove it with a testimonial
  5. Add social proof and authority
  6. Use a winning layout template
  7. Use a simple, low-commitment, and benefit-rich CTA
  8. Explain exactly what happens next after someone buys
  9. Make it pass the "blur test"
