The setup mistakes I made, in order
Accepting the default chart of accounts. It had forty accounts I never used and none of the three I needed, so I created new ones as I went and ended up with income split across five names.
Connecting the bank before setting an opening balance. Six months of history arrived with no starting point, and the file never agreed with the statement again.
Letting the bank rules categorise everything. Rules are wonderful once they are right. Mine were guesses that then applied themselves to hundreds of transactions.
Migrating from a spreadsheet by typing in totals. Every customer balance became one lump, so I could never see who owed what.
