Best tool to build forum for community?

I'm looking for a way to let my users interact and support each other online. I am thinking a forum would be ideal (similar to what's going on here with IndieHackers).

Do you have any suggestions for free tools to use to accomplish this? I don't want to build a forum from scratch but I am a programmer so I can use a tool that might require more setup. I know Slack is an option - any thoughts on that as well?

Thanks. It's starting plan is $100 though. That's a little steep at this stage. I'm hoping to find something closer to free dollars, to start.

It's free if you self hosting it.

Discord could be a good shot. https://discordapp.com/

I have integrated NodeBB (https://github.com/NodeBB/NodeBB) with an existing portal. Nice thing about it was that it comes with a nice session sharing plugin (https://github.com/julianlam/nodebb-plugin-session-sharing) which allows me to use existing login etc.

What are your thoughts on a Facebook group? Super easy to create and easier for everyone to use and be a part of. Everyone is on FB already as well so it's one less thing to sign up on. What are your thoughts?

I totally hear you in the scandals point of view but even if some people don't use it as much as say instagram. Everyone still has it to stay connected via messenger. It is one of those platforms that will always be around because of the connections and events run through it. I hate scrolling though my feed but I still use it to follow pages and sell stuff thought the market place.

Gary V and lots of major entrepreneurs are still preaching Facebook advertising for a reason.

Alright I agree with you on your point. I guess In my life almost everyone I know (in tech or not) still uses it in some way. That being said I am not in the tech field as much as you are so clearly.

I appreciate your point of view!

I am very programmed from bootstrapping things and haveing no knowledge of coding and forums in general. I always look for the simplest way to do something to save time and headache. Clearly this isn't the concept this thread was about though.

So, In my college days I built a website to connect counsellors and students, where in I was searching for a open source project which is easy to setup and has already built functionality!

    Then I found this:- https://codoforum.com/

I think this is something you can use for sure and also https://www.discourse.org/ is something which is pretty popular to setup a forum.

This one seems great for this kind of discussion style. Might give it a try for a project or two.
