Best way to promote your side project?

Help people! Post insightful answers to relevant questions on communities like IH or Reddit, and talk about your product at the end. For example, when building Sitesauce, I shared a lot of anecdotes about how I built and promoted it in here. If you're just talking about your project people have no reason to pay attention exceptnbeing nice. Providing value gives them something in return.
This is true, I wrote blogs on my projects while I was in school and always got nice emails from folks thanking me.
If I'd done the same with any idea I'd imagine the outcome would be equally the same. Write helpful blog post --> point to your side project with a link.

What have you tried so far? There are hundreds of ways to go about promoting something. Mostly it is finding people who would get value from them, and telling them.
Have you sent it directly to 10 people you know should be interested?
Yeah I just wouldn't know who to send in to. I don't really have any acquaintances that are interested in the software industry.
Sounds like you need to get online and find some potential audience people by reaching out directly. If you don't know what they want, if you don't know them, you can never create a product for them.
I've been using Facebook groups and surprisingly LinkedIn for thegoodstartup.com! Most my traffic comes from there, which was actually pretty shocking to me
