Beta test the new Stripe Checkout
Hey IH! My name is Atty and I’m an engineer at Stripe.
Following up on @PatrickC's post [0] from a while back, I’m excited to share that we’re working on a new version of Stripe Checkout [1]. It's the simplest way to start accepting payments with Stripe, and we would love to have you beta test it.
Major changes include:
- Brand new design
- Simple client only integration, no server required
- Support for one-off payments and subscriptions
- Apple Pay and (soon) Google Pay built-in
- ...and lots of new features coming soon!
If you’re selling digital products or SaaS (or about to start), we think you’ll like this!
UPDATE: interest has been overwhelming, and while we’re glad to get all your feedback, we’re going to pause new users for now. The product should be publicly available soon, so you won’t have to wait for long!

I'm going to be excited if this natively handles VAT.

But what does "handle VAT" mean? Are we including the filing and remittance of VAT / sales taxes for full global compliance?

I was referring to a couple of things:
(1) Your comment in the thread you linked to above, where you said "Stripe Billing to handle VAT would be a dream" (I followed up directly in that thread);
and
(2) The "handles VAT" comment above from @jonathanbull.
I can answer this -
I’m looking for everything up to filing and remittance. That’s determining a customer’s place of supply, taking and validating their VAT number, and then charging the corresponding amount of tax.
There are third party SaaS solutions, but it makes sense for it to be an integral part of Checkout.

Having a payment page not in the native language of a customer is often a showstoper for the payment ....
Fully agreed, and we're working on it as we speak. Expect localization to be live soon. 💯

Will there by a way to add a custom field to the Checkout form? For example, the Checkout popup form asks for an "Email" and the credit card details, but I'd love to add a "Full Name" and "Phone Number" input box too.

Hi Atty, could you perhaps give me some inside information on whether Stripe will support the South African market anytime soon. There has been constant requests over the last few years from a number of South Africans, but never any solid answers.

In the meantime, have you considered Atlas (https://stripe.com/atlas)? You can quickly incorporate a US entity and start accepting payments with Stripe. Many South African founders have done this to get off the ground.

Not yet, but something we’re looking at. What would your ideal way this would work be?
Ideally I'd say seamless in a similar way as the current sign up works, prompting the customer to select a new plan, possibly updating their payment method and offering a way to configure prorating one or the other. Not a simple feature to implement for sure but it'd be great to have for SaaS-like apps.
Hi @athyuttamre - I would love to implement this for my company, ShotCrew (https://shotcrew.com/). I've been looking for an easy solution that would allow both one-time payments, and monthly subscriptions. There's never been an easy option working directly with Stripe. Will this work?

Depends on your definition of everything. :)
We support client side payments for one-time purchase products and subscriptions. Checkout comes with Apple Pay and other wallets built in, and will support more features automatically in the future (no changes needed from you!)
But do you still need to process the token, create the customer, create the subscription etc. on the backend?

That looks great! I was wondering: is there a way to limit the list of countries for checkout forms that take a shipping address? If not, what is the typical way to implement this?

Hi! Do you mean for the current version of Stripe Checkout, or more generally? If the former, we don’t have that option unfortunately but it’s feedback we’ll take for the new version. More generally, you would ask for the user’s country first, and check it against your own whitelist.
I was thinking of when trying to sell physical goods, and you're only able to ship to a subset of countries. I guess that's not available out of the box just yet. The only minor niggle I have with your suggested approach is just that an anonymous user needs to submit all their details before finding out that they can't get the product shipped to them.
The other question I have about the future is: do you ever see checkout being expanded into a generic cart system with backend persistence? This seems to be pretty much a common but annoying requirement for any e-commerce site and doesn't seem to be addressed smoothly anywhere.
Essentially, instead of tracking all the cart products in JS (or app backend) and specifying them when submitting the form, have one button that allows adding to cart and one for checkout. The former would create some persistent bucket in the backend to which the user can add product ID's and the latter would just take that bucket ID as a parameter and figure out the pricing and so on for the form. Anyway, just my 2c!

My project allows developers to sell packages (extensions in our context) through our platform. I currently use Stripe elements on the checkout, but would love to offer more payment methods for our subscriptions without too much work..

Is there a way (or a way on the way) to sell things with a link from the client side? It would be really powerful to be able to drop a Stripe Checkout link in the description of a YouTube or Instagram video like you can with Paypal.
Interesting! Would you like this for selling a predefined product, or to collect a donation for a dynamic amount?
This is my exact use case, and baffles me that it's not already a feature. I would like to send my customer a link (or embed it on my site, ideally with copy/paste coding) where they can checkout.
Ideally they'd select the number users they want, and then a subscription is created for them.
Hopefully that's what this is :)
It’s very close. :) You can easily add the new Checkout to your site and send customers there. We’re actively looking at creating links that you can share with them as well.
Curious — what are you selling?
Sounds good. Once we implement in-app stripe checkout it won't be an issue, but in the meantime we're sending links through zoho checkout.

I'm not 100% what a dynamic account is, but I meant for a product instead of a donation. Here's an example: A YouTuber called TechLead made a bunch of videos then offered to sell them as a set. He put a paypal link at the bottom of a video and then sent the content to anyone who bought.
It doesn't have to be a digital product, either. Someone who makes wedding dresses and talks about them on YT can put paypal links in video descriptions and then mail them out to people who buy. Singers who teach on YouTube can use a similar method to sell their training courses. Other than shoutouts and brand deals, buy links are possibly the only way many Instagrammers can make a profitable business.
It's not the fanciest UX in the world, but a lot of people who have something of value to sell on the internet don't have a web site of their own!
Absolutely agree. Checkout today is built to be added to a website, but we can add shareable links too! Please email us regardless so we can share our progress and get your feedback. :)
