Biggest pain with referral marketing?

For those who have tried to grow with referral marketing, and it didn't work as intended, what was the reason for this? What has been your biggest pain in the process? Was it the software you tried to build the program with, users not sharing the links with others, bad incentives, etc..?

For those who got traction with it, what were some things that helped? (ie. offer, message). What were some things you learned in the process?

    Well, i don't have a ton of experience but did get one big f**k up with an influencer:

    1. We didn't test the full end-to-end flow before they've posted about our offer. Due to a combination of bugs and Instagram's url encoding users couldn't complete the action on the landing page..
    2. The affiliate didn't fully understand the product capabilities, causing them to refer potential customers which our platform didn't support. They in turn ranted to the affiliate which demoralized them and caused them to end the partnership.
